DH follows up on cases of bocavirus infection in Shenzhen

In response to media enquiries on the detection of four recent cases of bocavirus infection at the border control points in Shenzhen, a spokesman for the Department of Health (DH) said today (October 9) that the Department will seek more information about the cases from the Shenzhen Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau.

The spokesman said, "Bocavirus belongs to the family of parvoviruses, and may cause respiratory tract infection and gastroenteritis. Children are more susceptible to the infection.

"The DH has implemented temperature screening for travellers at border control points. Further epidemiological investigation will be conducted if they are found to develop fever and symptoms of infectious disease. Appropriate health advice, including referrals of the patients to medical institutions for follow-up, will also be offered in order to reduce the risk of spread of infectious disease to Hong Kong," the spokesman stressed.
