Cluster of Respiratory Syncytial Virus cases in female mentally handicapped ward of Tuen Mun Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The spokesperson of Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH) made the following announcement today (September 8):

Four patients (aged 29 to 46) and three staff members in a female mentally handicapped ward of TMH had presented with upper respiratory symptoms since August 28.

Appropriate viral tests were arranged for the patients and their test results were positive for Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV).

The patients concerned are being treated under isolation.
Two patients are in serious condition and the other two are in stable condition.

Two of the concerned staff members have resumed duty while the other one is on sick leave now.

Admission to and discharge from the ward have been suspended. Restricted visiting to the ward has been imposed.

Infection control measures have already been stepped up according to established guidelines.

All other patients in the ward concerned are under close surveillance.

The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

Regarding the earlier announcement on a cluster of patients in a female mentally handicapped ward confirmed with Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), the spokesperson of Tuen Mun Hospital provided the following update today (September 9):

Three more patients (aged 31 to 50) in the ward had presented with upper respiratory infection symptoms.

Appropriate viral tests were arranged for the patients and the test results are pending.

The patients concerned are being treated under isolation and are in stable condition.

Admission to and discharge from the ward have been suspended. Restricted visiting to the ward has been imposed. Infection control measures have already been stepped up according to established guidelines.

All other patients in the ward concerned are under close surveillance.

The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.

Two more patients (aged 41 and 67) in the ward had presented with upper respiratory infection symptoms.

Appropriate viral tests had been arranged for the patients and the test results are pending.

The concerned patients are being treated under isolation and in stable condition.

Admission to and discharge from the ward have been suspended. Restricted visiting to the ward has been imposed. Infection control measures have already been stepped up according to established guidelines.

All other patients in the ward concerned are under close surveillance.

The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
