    EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS
    An intensive surveillance system is in place for all poultry farms, poultry markets and pet bird shops in Hong Kong. The H5N1 infected bird was detected in the ongoing territory wide surveillance program on wild birds. No spread of the disease was evident. There are no chicken farms within three kilometres of where the dead bird was found. The end date of the outbreak was the same as the date the bird was found (21st January 2022). Note: The date of last occurrence of the H5N1 strain in wild birds in Hong Kong is 16/12/2021.

    AFFECTED POPULATION DESCRIPTION
    A dead Eurasian Curlew was collected on 21st January 2022 at a gei wai in the Mai Po Nature Reserve. The species is an abundant winter visitor mainly found in the intertidal area of Deep Bay, including Mai Po, with small number recorded in summer.
