Do they really have the capacity for that many hospitalizations? Or to test them all for H1N1? This is Guangdong, so there are at least two other agents that would cause similar symptoms that would need to be ruled out.

Granted, China is in the northern hemisphere, so this is flu season, but that just makes China's job of detecting respiratory viruses that much harder.

Re: China - Nearly 20000 patients in the hospital explosion force in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province

We need to change the title of this thread - a closer reading of the first article indicates that 20,000 (17,000 + 3,000) is the number of people seeking treatment for ILI - not the number of hospitalizations. In fact, the article explicitly refers to that this happened in four or five hospitals (which couldn't nearly hold that many ILI patients as admissions).

By comparison, Lviv, Ukraine, which had one of the worst and most sudden H1N1 outbreaks in the world, has reported about 10,000 hospitalizations in a month, and they are hospitalizing mild cases too, as their hospitalization fatality rate is under 1%. There is no evidence that China is hospitalizing mild cases. If 20,000 people get hospitalized in Shenzen in a few days, we wouldn't need lab testing - that would be the H5N1 pandemic.

Here is the "official" count in Shenzhen.

Published on November 25, 2009 by connie | This story has been viewed 62 times
Since implementation of the daily zero reporting system of severe and dead H1N1 flu cases, the statistical result of the first day is that, as of November 22, with one patient dead, 12 in hospital and 2 in danger, a total of 1156 have been confirmed with H1N1 flue, According to the Shenzhen Department of Health.

In the previous two weeks, the number of flu-like illnesses diagnosed in city hospitals had fallen, but was still higher than the average recorded in previous years.

Because testing for H1N1 virus was no longer conducted on patients with minor symptoms of flu, the actual number of swine flu cases could be higher than the official figure, commission officials said.

With the change in weather, the spread of the swine flu virus will accelerate, posing a serious threat to local residents, experts say.

Meanwhile, 12 people had shown side effects after being inoculated with free swine flu vaccine, the city?s medication and medical equipment appraisal center said yesterday. They had either recovered or were recovering.

The 12 showed symptoms of headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and chest tightness. The two most serious cases involved symptoms such as muscle soreness and irregular heartbeat.

The first batch of the H1N1 vaccine arrived in Shenzhen late last month. By Friday, about 77,000 people had been inoculated, including 32,638 students.

"The hospital can no longer accommodate the patient: Even there is no room for them to sit. They are treated like ordinary flu. No more room, let alone space for quarantine.

"This disease outbreak very quickly. Many who died within two or three days. Their lungs were infected and cause lung failure. Those who died in a large number are children and adolescents. Many patients died before the examination, so H1N1 cases could not be traced.

"Provide a quarantine room for patients is very expensive. At first the government who finances. Later the government can no longer, so now who is the patient's own pay or insurance companies," said the doctor further.

The nurse continued, "We worked until midnight every day. Some doctors become very busy and go into hospital. Sometimes too many people and parents of children who want their children to a doctor immediately received treatment. Some families become angry the nurse-even hit him because the line moved very slowly. Because many doctors are sick of our labor shortages. "

According to the Yangcheng Evening Daily reports, there was an announcement at the entrance to the hospital that the waiting time of at least 3 hours. A nurse said that waiting times at night even longer.

What is scary is that if a sporadic case of H5N1 or SARS were to emerge in this environment, it would be almost undetectable.
