  • China - DOH retracts false alarm on swine flu cases

The Department of Health (DOH) retracted early Monday morning an earlier report of two possible swine flu cases after close medical examination proved it was a false alarm.

Accompanied by Shih Wen-yi, deputy director-general of the Center for Disease Control (CDC), DOH chief Yeh Chin-chuan called a press conference at the Central Epidemics Control Center late Sunday night to announce the possible two cases involving a 32-year-old mother and her baby daughter of one year and nine months.

But detailed medical test proved negative results later and lifted the alert at 2:00 a.m. on Monday morning.

The two Taipei residents were alleged earlier to have been infected with virus of A(HIN1) influenza, commonly known as swine flu after their return from the United States earlier this month.

Yeh said the two landed at the Taoyuan International Airport aboard NW005 flight from Portland of the U.S. West Coast and transit NW021 flight via Japan on May 5.

Neither showed any symptoms when getting aboard of the flights or landing in Taoyuan.

Yeh said the two, who live in the area of Jianguo South Road in Taipei, were placed under quarantine and treatment at the Heping Campus of the Taipei Municipal Hospital after being detected with suspected flu symptoms.

But further tests showed that they were not contracted with the virus.

Yeh said the government scaled the flu alert back to Level One based on the final test result.

He reemphasized that there is no need to panic because the government agencies have fully prepared to cope with the possible importation of A(HIN1) cases.

The public health system will be able to contain the possible spread of the virus, he stressed.

But he the two have recently visited the National Taiwan University Hospital and the Renai branch of the city hospital for treatment of fevers and coughing.
