Adenovirus causing persistent fever in children
There was a commotion among the parents

High fever for 7 days accompanied by coughing up blood
Recently, a 3-year-old boy named Xiaoyu (pseudonym) in Fuzhou had a high fever for 7 days due to adenovirus infection. During this period, after taking cephalosporin and other anti-infection drugs and other symptomatic treatments in a hospital, the condition still recurred, the high fever did not subside, and Xiaoyu eventually developed symptoms of coughing up blood. His parents immediately sent the child to the Fujian Provincial Maternal and Child Health Hospital.

Doctors at Fujian Provincial Maternal and Child Health Hospital arranged for Xiaoyu to undergo a lung CT scan based on the recent prevalence of respiratory pathogens. They confirmed that he had adenovirus pneumonia and ruled out necrotizing pneumonia. Xiaoyu's parents were relieved. Subsequently, the hospital treated him with interferon nebulization antiviral and symptomatic treatment. On the second day, Xiaoyu's temperature was finally under control, and he recovered on the fourth day.
It is understood that in Fujian Provincial Maternal and Child Health Hospital, the number of children infected with adenovirus admitted to the fever clinic and pediatric outpatient and emergency departments in May increased by about 20% to 30% compared with March and April, and more than 30 cases can be diagnosed clinically every day.
    What are adenoviruses?
    Symptoms of infection?
Adenovirus is an important viral pathogen in humans. Due to its numerous types, it can cause a variety of diseases such as respiratory tract infections, conjunctivitis, gastrointestinal diseases, etc. It may also cause viral hepatitis, meningitis, myocarditis and other diseases.
    Respiratory tract infections
Adenovirus is one of the most important pathogens of acute respiratory tract infection, causing respiratory tract infection and, in severe cases, pneumonia.
Common clinical manifestations of respiratory tract infection include fever, cough, sore throat, tonsillitis, etc. Adenoviruses related to respiratory tract infection mainly include HadV-3, 4, and 7. Among them, HadV-3 and HadV-7 are the main pathogens causing lower respiratory tract infections in children under 5 years old worldwide.

Adenovirus is also the main pathogen causing conjunctivitis, which can cause eye diseases such as acute keratoconjunctivitis and acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis. The clinical manifestations and severity vary depending on the type.
Acute keratoconjunctivitis can occur in all age groups. The inflammation can affect the conjunctiva and cornea. In severe cases, it can lead to pseudomembrane formation and blepharobulbar adhesion. Pharyngococcygeal fever is more common in adolescents, and the main symptoms are fever, pharyngitis, acute follicular conjunctivitis, etc. Acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis is more common in young and middle-aged people aged 15 to 40 years old, and the main symptoms are redness and swelling of the eyelids, and high congestion in the eyelids and bulbar conjunctiva.
    Gastrointestinal disorders
Adenovirus can also cause diseases such as gastroenteritis, and accounts for a high proportion of the pathogen spectrum of diarrheal syndrome, second only to rotavirus and norovirus. It is common in children under 5 years old, and gastrointestinal infections will cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, fever and other symptoms.

    The child has a fever
    Parents, don't worry.
Many parents get anxious when they see their children have a persistent high fever, and even take out antibiotics from their home for their children to take. In fact, viral infections are different from bacterial infections, and antibiotics have little effect on viral infections. If a child is infected with adenovirus, antibiotics are ineffective.
Once children have persistent high fever, severe cough, shortness of breath and other serious symptoms, they should go to the hospital in time and actively cooperate with treatment. Similarly, the elderly and adults with low immunity should not relax their vigilance. If the high fever does not subside, they should seek medical treatment in time and not bear it.

Dr. Zhang Boqiu, chief physician of the Pediatric Clinic at Fujian Provincial Maternity and Child Health Hospital, reminds parents that during the child's treatment, in addition to paying attention to changes in body temperature, they should also pay attention to some effective "signals" after treatment: for example, whether the child's body temperature is gradually controlled after treatment; if the peak fever value decreases, the fever interval is prolonged, and the mental state improves, it means that the overall treatment is effective and parents do not need to worry too much.
Generally speaking, the natural course of adenovirus infection is about 1 week, and sometimes may last 2 weeks, but there are individual differences in the length of the course.
There is no specific medicine yet
    Pay attention to proper isolation
Currently, there is no vaccine available for adenovirus. Children with adenovirus gastroenteritis are recommended to be isolated for two weeks, or released from isolation after two negative fecal adenovirus antigen tests.
At the same time, reducing gatherings and reducing contact can also effectively prevent adenovirus. Do a good job of respiratory protection and hand hygiene on a daily basis, ventilate the room, wear a mask, wash hands frequently, etc. Pay attention to standardized disinfection in large public places, such as swimming pools.
