China - 3 children hospitalized with pneumonia caused by humidifier misuse, Hebei province - December 8, 2021
A netizen in Handan, Hebei broke the news that three children in his family were admitted to the hospital because they had contracted bronchitis and pneumonia using humidifiers. The person involved said that the three children were fine during the day, but in the middle of the night they suddenly had difficulty breathing, vomiting, headaches and high fever. After the family rushed them to the hospital, the doctor diagnosed that it was because of the humidifier.
"In fact, the humidifier is not as terrible as expected. When many parents use the humidifier, there are problems with the method of use. I have summarized the most nominated misunderstandings.
Some parents did not know the water requirements of the humidifier in advance and used tap water by mistake, which caused the baby to get pneumonia.
Tap water contains calcium, magnesium ions, bleaching powder and other substances. If tap water is used in the humidifier, some of these substances will be sprayed out with the water mist.
If the water quality is poor or polluted, the impurities (chlorine, metal ion, etc.) inside will volatilize into the air along with the water mist.
In addition, if the humidifier uses tap water for a long time, it will easily breed bacteria and viruses.
The US Environmental Protection Agency's recommendation is distilled or purified water. If parents think the cost is too high, there is a more affordable method: homemade cold boiled water.
Boil the water and let it cool. Use medical gauze to filter out impurities such as scale. You can use it with confidence.
Vinegar, bactericides, oil, blue plate roots Some people think that adding vinegar, isatis root, aromatherapy and other "condiments" to the humidifier can achieve the effects of moisturizing and sterilizing, but this is not the case.
Respiratory doctors said that adding "condiments" to humidifiers is not only incapable of antibacterial and antiviral. On the contrary, after atomization of aromatherapy essential oils, floating particles formed are inhaled into the lungs, or allergic pneumonia can be caused.
The air humidity is not as high as possible. If the humidity is too high and the indoor air is not circulated, it is easy to breed bacteria. If the baby inhales a large amount of bacteria-containing water vapor, it is easy to cause respiratory sensation. In severe cases, it can also cause pneumonia.
The proper indoor humidity is 50% to 60%, which can reduce suspended particulate matter (including various pathogenic microorganisms) in the air. If this is exceeded, the humidifier must be turned off in time.
If the humidifier does not change the water for a long time, it is easy to breed mold and cause "humidifier pneumonia". Doctors said that most patients with allergies can get better on their own, but patients with Aspergillus pneumonia will have symptoms such as fever, cough, and difficulty breathing. In severe cases, they may die.
Clean the humidifier sink every day, otherwise the humidifier will become a bacterial and fungal culture medium, which will increase the risk of respiratory infections and allergic diseases in children.
The best practice is to change the water every day and clean the inside of the machine once every 3-5 days."
