SARS, AI strategic plan reviewed
(KPL) The Asia-Pacific Strategy for Preventing Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Avian Influenza (AI) was reviewed on 2 June at the International Cooperation and Training Centre to handle with the future spread might be occurred in the country.
The meeting has reviewed the Asia-Pacific Strategy for SARS and AI Prevention is to lay out a route for strengthening the capacity of infectious diseases prevention plan for Asia-Pacific countries, including Laos.
In addition, the strategy is to improve the capacity of controlling plans. This SARS and AI pose a threat for human being.
The SARS was first reported in Asia in February 2003. Over the next few months, the illness spread to more than two dozen countries in North America, South America, Europe, and Asia before the SARS global outbreak of 2003 was contained. And then bird flu had spread which affected to socio-economic development and people health in the region and the world.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), a total of 8,098 people worldwide became sick with SARS during the 2003 outbreak. Of these, 774 died.
The meeting have evaluated the implementation of Asia-Pacific strategic preparedness for communicable disease prevention in Laos by estimating surveillance and disease responding, diagnosis, control, communication and cooperation in disease control and animal and human health checking.
The meeting was chaired by Dr Ponmek Daraloy, Minister of Public Health and attended by Dr Dong In An, country representative of World Health Organisation to Laos and concerned officials.
