A chemical company in Jiangxi is suspected of leaking toxic gas: villagers fell to the ground and sent for medical treatment, and crops dried up in 20 minutes

    Cover news reporter Yang Feng
On July 18, several villagers in Bangang Village, Zhoutian Town, Huichang County, Ganjiang, Jiangxi, told the cover news reporter that on the morning of July 16, a chemical company in Huichang County was suspected of having a toxic gas leak, causing dozens of villagers in Bangang Village. Dizziness, nausea and other uncomfortable symptoms occurred, and some villagers were unable to fall to the ground on the spot and were sent to a doctor; the toxic gas also caused more than 400 acres of crops in Bangang Village to wither and turn yellow.
Bangang village crops withered due to irritating gas
The cover news reporter learned from the staff on duty in the Zhoutian Township government that an irritating gas leak did occur on the morning of July 16th. The township government has been counting the loss of crops and has organized all villagers who feel unwell to be sent to the doctor for inspection. There was no report on the evening of July 17 that any villagers were injured.
The staff of Huichang County People’s Hospital told reporters that from July 16th to July 18th, the hospital did admit a group of patients who inhaled toxic and irritating gases. The specific condition is yet to be checked and judged by the receiving physician. It is not convenient to report to the reporter. It was revealed that most of the villagers who came for inspection have been discharged from the hospital.
The villager’s medical record card of Bangang Village showed the diagnosis result as: irritant gas poisoning
Li Yiping, a villager in Bangang village who accompanied relatives and friends in the hospital, told the cover news reporter that as of the afternoon of the 18th, there were still 9 villagers undergoing examination and treatment in the hospital. Among them, 3-4 had more severe symptoms, and the most severe one had mouths. , Ulcers appear in the throat. After completing the routine inspection, many villagers who had symptoms of discomfort but had normal inspection indicators were asked to leave the hospital and go home for observation.
The medical record cards of hospitalized villagers provided by Li Yiping to reporters showed that some villagers were diagnosed as "sulfur dioxide poisoning" and some were diagnosed as "irritating gas poisoning."
Unidentified gas caused many villagers to faint on the ground, and crops withered in less than 20 minutes
At 8 o'clock in the morning on July 16, when more irritating gas floated, Zhang Zhou (a pseudonym), a villager in Bangang Village, was doing farm work in a watermelon shed. "There was some smell in the air, and then it got more and more smelly. We couldn't stand it before we came out of the greenhouse."

Zhang Zhou saw that under the influence of unknown gas, all the crops in the field dried up in less than 20 minutes. Among the villagers working in the field, some of the older women might be poisoned by the gas and fell down shortly after walking. In the field. Seeing this, several young people with better health ran over to rescue them. Zhang Zhou also immediately called the driver of the village's passenger transport and asked him to come by and take the weak and dizzy villagers to the hospital as soon as possible. Later, Zhang Zhou also felt dizzy and nauseous, and went to the hospital for an examination and stayed in the hospital for observation.
Villager Zhang Gen (pseudonym) of Bangang Village remembers that on July 16, after more than 50 people in the village felt unwell, they all went to the hospital for examination. More than 10 people had severe symptoms, dizziness and repeated vomiting. Zhang Gen's wife is the one with more serious symptoms.

Both Zhang Zhou and Zhang Gen told reporters that more than 400 mu of crops in the three groups in the village withered to varying degrees. Zhang Zhou saw that even the leaves on the trees next to the farmland had fallen off a lot. "Now, let alone selling the vegetables grown in the village, I dare not eat it. Some villagers have stomachaches and went to the hospital after eating some of the withered vegetables."
Li Yiping also said that when buying vegetables in the town, everyone must first ask if they are the vegetables in Bangang Village. “The vegetables grown in the village nowadays no one dares to ask for them.”
The Chemical Industry Park is more than 600 meters away from the village, and at least 3 "accidents" occurred within a week
Zhang Gen remembers that the pungent smell came from the chemical factory south of the village, which was less than 200 meters from the farmland in Shanggang Village and only 600 meters from the house.
The 92nd Industrial Base is less than 600 meters away from Bangang Village
The staff of Zhoutian Township government confirmed to the cover news reporter that the unidentified irritant gas came from the nine-difluoride salt chemical industry base in the south of Shanggang Village.
According to his understanding, on July 16, during the trial production process of a company in the base, some gas may be discharged, which affected Shanggang Village, which is located at the lower wind vent to the north of the company. Because the Jiuer Fluoride Salt Chemical Industry Base is located in Junmenling Town, which is not under the jurisdiction of Zhoutian Town, "What we are currently doing is to ask the villagers to check the body to see if there is any discomfort. The town will first solve the inspection and treatment costs. . The second is to set up an isolation zone between the village and the chemical base to prevent villagers from passing through. The third is to count the damage to the crops, and then demand compensation from the company involved. Because of administrative jurisdiction issues, the chemical base and the involved Specific investigations of enterprises can only be done by the county."
According to the official website of the Huichang County People’s Government, Huichang County’s 92 Industrial Base and Jiangxi (Huichang) Fluoride Chemical Base are the same industrial park, which was approved by the Jiangxi Provincial Commission of Industry and Information Technology as the “Jiangxi Province Fluoride Chemical Industry Base” in June 2011. It is currently the only provincial-level fluorine salt chemical industry base in Jiangxi Province, and the fluorine salt chemical industry cluster is listed as one of the key industrial clusters in Jiangxi Province. The total planned area of the base is 10,000 mu, and the developed area is 4,000 mu. There are currently 24 enterprises and more than 3,000 employees. In 2019, the main business income will be 3.763 billion yuan. On October 4, 2020, Huichang County established the 92 Industrial Base Construction Office in the Jiuer Fluoride Chemical Industry Base to take charge of the administrative business in the industrial park.
Around July 16, accidents occurred in the 92nd Industrial Base
Several villagers in Bangang Village told reporters that within a week before and after the unknown gas leak on July 16, they had seen two small explosions in the industrial park. The pictures provided by the villagers to reporters showed that inside the industrial park. Black smoke emerged from the chemical plant after the explosion. "Usually, there are often peculiar smells coming from the industrial park. We were worried but there was no way. We did not expect to faint people this time."
Suspected leaking chemical companies stopped production, and the pungent smell did not reappear
The cover news reporter learned that on July 16, the company suspected of leaking irritating gas during the trial production process, on October 12, 2020, bid for the 26,000 square meters of industrial land in the 92 Industrial Base at the reserve price, and then began to build the factory. The business scope of this enterprise is the production, research and development, and sales of chemical products (excluding hazardous chemicals). At present, the enterprise has stopped work.
Mr. He, a staff member of the 92 Industrial Base Construction Office who is in charge of the suspected gas leakage enterprise, told reporters that there was indeed an incident of gas irritation that caused the villagers to feel unwell on July 16. Mr. He understands that the current gas safety inspections in the industrial park are normal.
Both the Zhoutian Township Government and the 92nd Industrial Base Construction Office told reporters that they have not requested the evacuation of Bangang Villagers. Several Bangang villages told reporters that the pungent and peculiar smell in the village disappeared after the 16th and did not reappear. The staff on duty of the Zhoutian Township government and several villagers in Bangang Village told reporters that no deaths have been caused by the environmental incident.
The staff of the Propaganda Department of the Huichang County Party Committee of the Communist Party of China told the cover news reporter that the specific circumstances of the environmental incident will be notified after the cause is found out. As of press time, the cover news reporter has not retrieved the relevant announcements from Huichang County’s official public release. The reporter called Huichang County Emergency Management Bureau, Ecological Environment Bureau and other functional departments many times. Suspected that due to weekend reasons, no one answered the call.
