Wild raccoon dogs appear in more than 100 communities in Shanghai: "attack" without warning

(Original title: There have been wild "raccoons" in more than 100 communities in Shanghai: What should I do if there are too many "attack" pets?)

"Didn't the experts say that it is timid by nature and generally does not attack people? I was attacked when I was walking the dog the other day..."
On June 10 this year, Mr. Chen, a resident of Qiangweijiuli Community, Lane 1518, Guangfulin Road , Songjiang District , Shanghai , called the "12345" hotline to tell about his experience of being attacked by wild animals "raccoons" in the community with his pet dog. He told reporters that a large number of raccoon dogs appeared in the community this year. Not only is there a lot of raccoon dogs, but raccoon dogs have also shown a certain degree of aggression. Counting a resident who was scratched while walking not long ago, there have been 2 incidents of raccoon dogs hurting pets in the community.

Last year, Jiefang Daily·Shangguan News reported on the raccoon dog located in Milano Guidu Community, Sijing Town, Songjiang District. At that time, as many as 60 raccoon dogs also caused distress to the residents of the community. In fact, last year, with the exception of Milano Guidu Community, many communities in Songjiang District all reflected a significant increase in the number of raccoon dogs in the community. Compared to last year, the situation is even better this year. According to estimates by the Songjiang District Forestry Station, in Songjiang alone this year, there were at least 100 raccoon dogs in more than 100 communities, and many of them were numerous.

This shows that the raccoon dog has begun to adapt to the urban community environment. The raccoon dogs who settled in the community made it difficult for the residents and the management department. On the one hand, the wild nature of wild animals has made many residents frustrated, and at the same time, raccoon dogs have been upgraded from last year’s "three-you" animal to a "second-level" protected animal, with strict restrictions on disposal. Faced with more and more wild animals in the community, what should we do?

    "Pounced on without warning"
On June 21, the reporter came to Qiangweijiuli Community. The community has a large area and is divided into 6 phases. There are high-rise buildings and villas in the community, and there are more than 2500 residents. The residential buildings are shaded by green trees and bamboo forests are interlaced, and the greening conditions are very good.
Citizen Mr. Chen recalled his experience in the early morning of June 9th: around 4:55 in the morning that day, when he was walking to the southeast side of Building No. 603 of Phase 3 of the community with two pet dogs, an animal that looked like a fox suddenly He sprang out from under the car parked on the side of the road and barked at the two dogs, not afraid of Mr. Chen who was holding the rope at all. Mr. Chen said that the two sides entangled for nearly 10 minutes, and the screams of animals awakened a block of residents. During the period, it also waited for an opportunity to pounce on the pet dog, biting the dog's hind leg. He showed the reporter a photo of the dog being bitten. The wound on the photo was several centimeters long, and the white hair around the wound was soaked in bright red. Mr. Chen sent his experience to the WeChat group of the community, and everyone told him that this wild animal, which is larger than a cat, is called "raccoon dog", and many of them have appeared in the community recently.

△In the early morning, Mr. Chen's pet dog was attacked by a raccoon dog (screenshot of surveillance video).

△In the evening, the raccoon came out of the grass.
On the afternoon of June 21, the reporter accompanied Mr. Chen to the Qiangwei Neighborhood Committee and retrieved the surveillance video from the southeast corner of Building 603 at the time of the incident. The video showed that after the raccoon stared at the pet dog, Mr. Chen kept pulling the pet dog back and raised his leg to kick. However, the raccoon dog was not afraid at all and approached the pet dog frequently and finally succeeded in attacking. After watching the surveillance, a staff member of the neighborhood committee added that raccoon dogs have been present in Qiangweijiuli community for at least 3 years. They often appear at night, but they rarely affect the normal life of residents. There has been a wounding incident..."
In the evening of June 21, reporters squatted guard in the community. At 7 o'clock, not far from where Mr. Chen's pet was bitten, a brown-haired raccoon dog with a round head and a round head sprang out of the bamboo forest near Building 601 and jumped onto the stone platform next to the greenery of the third phase. It looked at each other with the reporter for a while, then turned its head and stared at the residents coming and going on the sidewalk next to it, in a relaxed and relaxed manner. During the day, this was a spot where some cat-loving residents fed cat food, and there were often six or seven wild cats around. It seems that it has now become the “territory” of raccoon dogs. The night was getting darker, and in the fourth phase of the community, the reporter also found traces of raccoon dogs. There were two dark shadows lying in the middle of the passage in front of Building 611, and they could only see that they were raccoon dogs when they approached. Seeing someone, they got up and went into the bushes and disappeared. Not only near the residential buildings, but also on the main road on the east side of the community, the reporter also encountered raccoons coming in from outside the fence several times. They were quick to move. Before pressing the camera button on the mobile phone, they had already hid under the car and jumped into the greenery. in.

△ In front of Building 611 in Qiangwei Jiuli Community, a raccoon ran into the passage of the community.
In the community’s WeChat group, residents kept giving feedback on where they had witnessed raccoon dogs: A resident of Building No. 610 said that he often saw raccoon dogs fighting under the big tree at the door at around 9pm; a resident of Building 588 saw the raccoon dog returning. She slipped into the corridor and made her feel "scared"; an owner of Building 555 reminded everyone to pick up pets when walking past places where raccoon dogs are infested at night, because raccoon dogs will attack animals; next to Building 602, one A resident said that he saw 1 big, 3 small and 4 raccoon dogs at the food box where the wild cats were being fed, "driving away the wild cats and eating cat food in a big way"...

△The owner of Qiangweijiuli discussed the traces of raccoon dogs in the WeChat group.
Raccoon dogs appeared in at least more than 100 communities

How many raccoon dogs are there in Qiangwei Jiuli Community? Residents’ committee staff said: “I don’t know the specific numbers, but they are available in every phase of the community. Judging from the frequency of appearance, there must be dozens of them.” The raccoon dog has also become a topic of discussion among the residents. After the two conflicts Residents worry that more and more raccoon dogs will affect their normal life and personal safety. During the interview, many residents made requests: "If you can catch it or catch it, go to the safari park."

This year, the raccoon dog is far more troubled than the Qiangwei Jiuli district. On the morning of June 22, the reporter went to Jiucheng Lakeside Community on Laiyin Road in Songjiang District. This is also a large community with more than 3,000 residents. There is an artificial lake in the center of the community and there are many raccoon dogs. Moreover, it is close to the junction of Songjiang and Minhang, and very close to the urban area.
The staff of Jiucheng Lakeside Neighborhood Committee told reporters that only he saw with his own eyes, there were three "raccoon nests" in the community. He first brought the reporter to the front of Building 15, where a nest of raccoon dogs lived in the settlement crack at the root of the east wall of the corridor entrance. He showed a section of corridor monitoring on the night of June 17th. The nest of five raccoons walked into the corridor in a few seconds with no one else; beside Building 19, the settlement seam at the same location was also completed. After the raccoon nest, young raccoon dogs can sometimes be seen looking out at the entrance of the cave during the day; in the greenery next to Building 48 in the community, at 5 o'clock in the evening on June 21, six raccoon dogs came out of the greenery and chased each other to play. In addition, the residents also provided photos of raccoon dogs drinking water in the artificial lake in the community and eating cat food on the rocks in the central green belt .

△On the night of June 17, in Building 15 of Jiucheng Lakeside Community, corridor surveillance captured a nest of 5 raccoons walking into the corridor in a few seconds with no one else.
Regarding the presence of so many raccoon dogs in the community this year, the neighborhood committee staff were a little puzzled. “I saw raccoon dogs last year, but there are only one or two small raccoons per litter. This year, there are at least five or six raccoons. How can there be so many?” As several raccoon nests are close to the entrance of the corridor, the raccoon dogs that are active at night make residents who enter and exit very disturbed.
Gu Xuzhong, deputy director of Songjiang District Forestry Station, told reporters that compared to last year, raccoon dogs were mainly found in Sijing area. This year, raccoon dogs have almost "full bloom" in Songjiang District, and more than 100 communities have reported that raccoon dogs have appeared. In Jiuting and Dongjing, there are quite a few raccoon dogs in many communities. In addition, conflicts also occur occasionally. In the Olympic Garden Community on the east side of Jiucheng Lakeside Community, residents reported that "a swan raised in the community was killed by a raccoon dog."

△In the scene taken by residents of Jiucheng Lakeside Community, several raccoon dogs are eating cat food.
Not only in Songjiang District, but also in Qingpu District, there are also communities that are overwhelmed by raccoon dogs. Mr. Sun, the housekeeper of Xincheng·Yihuali District 2, Lane 58, Yinghao Road, is currently running around for the raccoon dogs in the community. He has found 4 raccoon nests, all of which are located in the green belt on the east side of the north-south main road of the community. On the evening of June 18th, he sprinkled cat food on a large rock not far from the entrance of the community as bait. Then 5 raccoon dogs appeared and climbed up the rock... "The residents on the main road come and go, and there are The children are running around, which is really worrying."

△ At Lane 58, Yinghao Road, Qingpu District, on the evening of June 18, Mr. Sun, the housekeeper, sprinkled cat food on a large rock not far from the entrance of the community as bait, and then 5 raccoon dogs appeared and climbed onto the rock.
Experts believe that conflict is a seasonal situation
Wang Fang, a researcher at the School of Life Sciences of Fudan University, who focuses on wildlife research, believes that raccoon dogs frequently enter the eyes of citizens, which is related to their improvement in urban adaptation. I know how to dig through trash cans to get human food, and I have slowly learned to find living space in outdoor units of air conditioners, basements, sewer pipes, etc."
So, is it normal that there have been many conflicts between raccoon dogs and pets this year? Is human intervention required? Wang Fang believes that this is a seasonal situation, which usually occurs from June to late July each year. Young raccoon dogs grow up and try to go out alone, but they have no experience and will behave "recklessly". At the same time, the female raccoon dog will also show higher aggression in order to protect the young raccoon dog. Wang Fang suggested that when walking the dog, leash the dog to avoid the pet dog from approaching the raccoon dog and not actively attack the young raccoon dog. "At least so far, the raccoon dog is not a dangerous animal, but a curious animal. After the little raccoon dog was reprimanded by people, he found that humans were not so friendly, so he learned not to take the initiative to approach humans."

△A litter of young raccoons photographed by residents of the Olympic Garden Community.
According to Yue Haiying , a wildlife protection worker at the Songjiang District Forestry Station , generally speaking, one or two raccoon populations in the community are normal, and human intervention is not required. Only when the density of raccoon dogs reaches a certain target, such as more than 5 raccoon dogs per hectare, does it need to be trapped and released for dilution after applying for a hunting license. However, the raccoon dog is currently in the lactation period and it is not the time for trapping. It has to wait until July and August. After receiving complaints for help recently, Songjiang District Forestry Station mainly went to the community to increase publicity and remind the community to prohibit feeding.
For more and more raccoon dogs appearing in the community, how to manage them is a new problem and a new challenge. Wang Fang suggested that the governance methods of relevant departments should also be constantly adjusted according to actual conditions. For example, in some cases, it is not entirely reasonable to use density as the only indicator of intervention. Some communities are very large. Although the number of raccoon dogs per hectare is not high, if they are gathered in the residential area, it will have a real impact on the residents. It is recommended that in this case, measures should be taken regardless of the density to prevent the raccoon dog from affecting the lives of citizens.
