Chinese health authorities are investigating a hospital in the eastern province of Fujian over four deaths apparently linked to the use of anaesthetics, the official Xinhua news agency said on Tuesday.
The four victims underwent operations for different conditions at the No. 2 Hospital of Sanming City and died between Sept. 3 and Oct. 11, Xinhua said.The victims included a three-year-old boy, a 26-year-old man, a 29-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman, Xinhua said.
"Local health and drugs supervision authorities are investigating the cause of the incidents. Samples of the drugs used in the operations are being tested," Xinhua quoted an unnamed hospital spokesman as saying.
China is battling a scandal over tainted milk that has killed four children and hospitalised thousands, but recent deaths at hospitals have highlighted problems within those institutions themselves.
Nine officials at a hospital in northwest Shaanxi province were fired earlier this month after the deaths of eight newborn babies from infections there, which were kept quiet for days before being reported to health authorities.
