Dead fish likely released by Buddhists

The 250 kilograms of dead fish taken out of waterways in Songjiang District may have been released by Buddhist followers who freed captive animals to celebrate the birth of Guanyin, the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy, officials said yesterday.
Songjiang District government said residents in Sijing Town reported that many Buddhist followers released fish into the water on March 30, which was the birthday of Guanyin in the Chinese Lunar calendar.

Dead fish in Shanghai river prompt safety fears

Hundreds of dead fish have washed up along the shorelines of a man-made river in Shanghai's Songjiang district since April 3, but the local water authority and environmental protection bureau insist the water is safe.
A total of 250 kilograms of dead fish, mainly crucian carp, have been retrieved in suburban Shanghai's Sijing pond since last week. Gao Yunchu, director of Songjiang water authority, said small fish with relatively weaker body defense systems were found dead at the beginning of April and the bodies of bigger fish such as carp were discovered on Saturday.

"The water quality is stable and safe," said the official, surnamed Zhang, from Songjiang Water Authority, on Sunday.
Zhang said the fish died due to illegal fishing by electrocution and poisoning, according to information from local fishermen.

MORE than 250 kilograms of dead fish had been taken out of waterways in Songjiang District by yesterday after nearby residents complained about the stink from the fish washing up on the river banks since last Monday.
Nearly all the dead fish, mainly various types of carp, had been removed by yesterday, water authorities said, but the reason for the large fish kill was not yet known.
Samples of the dead fish were sent to the agricultural commission for tests to determine the cause of their deaths.
