WASHINGTON — A 14-year-old female middle school student in Ruzhou, Henan, China, was sent to an epidemic prevention and quarantine center and had a high fever. The family members sought help from the relevant parties, but they were ignored. Reports and videos that eventually led to the death of the girl due to acute encephalitis went viral on the Chinese Internet , sparking outrage and backlash. Angry netizens not only criticized China's current epidemic prevention policies, but also called for those involved to be held accountable.
According to multiple media reports, the 14-year-old female student was sent to Wanji High School in Ruzhou City with her family for centralized isolation on October 14. After the girl entered the isolation point, she developed a high fever for two consecutive days. There was no doctor at the isolation point. After multiple calls for help, the girl was sent to the hospital on the evening of the 17th, but died in the early morning of the 18th due to delayed treatment of acute encephalitis.
A video posted on Douyin by a roommate who was quarantined showed a girl lying on a bed, wrapped in a quilt and twitching. When the roommate posted the video, he also asked netizens to forward the video in order to "save this poor child".
