  • China - New law to establish and improve the legal system and enforcement mechanism for the national security in Hong Kong - May 21, 2020

"Decision (Draft) on Establishing and Improving the Legal System and Enforcement Mechanism for the Maintenance of National Security in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region"

    May 21, 2020

    snip

In the face of possible future violence, Deng Jingcheng said that in the short term, some Hong Kong citizens who sympathize with the rioters may be dissatisfied with the law, and street violence in Hong Kong may reappear, but I believe that the Hong Kong Police Force is fully capable of responding. In the long run, this law will help the Hong Kong police and other law enforcement agencies to more effectively maintain peace in Hong Kong and safeguard national security, so that Hong Kong will no longer be the "weakest link" in national security.

The Hong Kong business tycoon Jimmy Lai has been arrested along with other pro-democracy and media figures, raising fears of a broad crackdown by China.
