BEIJING--China is blocking the import of Japanese foodstuffs, demanding exporters produce certificates stating the products are radiation-free.
Japanese food companies, saying they are being unfairly targeted, are demanding Beijing and Tokyo resolve the issue quickly.
According to White Foods Co., of Ayagawa, Kagawa Prefecture, Chinese authorities are holding products at a warehouse in Zhuhai, Guangdong province.
Soy sauce, flavor enhancers and other products left Kobe Port aboard two ships April 13 and 20. Upon arrival, the products were locked up in a local warehouse, the company said.
The company produced radiation-free certificates from its local chamber of commerce, but the Chinese were not satisfied, demanding "Japanese government" certificates.
