    China culls 80,000 birds in Hebei to tackle spreading bird flu

    China has culled 80,000 chickens in the country's north after detecting an outbreak of H7N9 bird flu on a farm of layer hens, said the agriculture ministry on Friday.

    Five thousand hens on the farm in Xingtai in Hebei province died in late April, said the ministry, and another 8,500 hens were infected with the disease.

    After confirming infection with the H7N9 virus, authorities ordered the culling of 80,057 poultry. The outbreak is under control, added the statement.

      Ministry of Agriculture Strengthen the Prevention/Control for H7N9
      In view of the current prevention/control situation toward H7N9 avian flu, the Ministry of Agriculture, on the basis of the preliminary work(s), is further improving its prevention/control work for leading the animal husbandry and veterinary departments. All departments should do their best in monitoring and emergency treatment/action(s), based on the requirement, and toward the poultry farm(s) detected any pathogen positive or outbreak of the ill, resolutely cull the birds and make them harmless, for elimination of latent risks timely.
      According to the sources, the Department of Veterinary Medicine in Xingtai county of Xingtai city, Hebei province found a farm breeding chickens have suspicious symptoms of avian flu on Apr. 28, 2017, at the farm, 8500 chickens got ill and 5000 died. On Apr. 30, 2017, Hebei Provincial Animal Disease Prevention and Control Center diagnosed this as suspected avian flu. On May 5, the National Avian Influenza reference laboratory confirmed the outbreak as H7N9 flu epidemic. After the outbreak, the local government, according to the relevant plans and control technical requirements, has culled 80,057 chickens in total and rendered them harmless. At this moment, the avian flu is effectively controlled.
