Human infection with avian influenza A(H9N2) virus

One new case of human infection with avian influenza A(H9N2) was reported from National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China to WHO on 14 September 2021. The case is a 11-year-old male student from Qiannan Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Guizhou Province, China with onset of a mild illness on 6 September 2021. He was not hospitalized. The case had a history of exposure to domestic poultry prior to illness onset and no further cases were suspected among family members at the time of reporting. To date, 17 cases of avian influenza A(H9N2) have been reported to WHO in the Western Pacific Region in 2021, and a total of 58 cases of human infection with avian influenza A(H9N2) have been reported to WHO in the Western Pacific Region since December 2015. The last case was reported from China, with onset date of 23 August 2021.
