    BEIJING (Reuters) - China has confirmed an outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N6 bird flu in Horgos in the far western Xinjiang region.

    The outbreak killed 1,015 out of 2,545 birds raised by farmers in Horgos, according to a notice on the website of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs late on Friday.

    Authorities culled 11,910 birds in the area to control the spread of the disease. The notice did not specify the type of poultry involved...

    China: A highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreak of poultry H5N6 subtype in Horgos, Xinjiang


    The Information Office of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs announced on May 30 that a high-pathogenic avian influenza epidemic of poultry H5N6 subtype occurred at Horgos City of Ili Prefecture in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
    On May 30, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs received a report from the China Animal Disease Prevention and Control Center. In the report, it is confirmed by the National Avian Influenza Reference Laboratory, that H5N6 subtype highly pathogenic avian influenza epidemic occurred in poultry raised by some farmers in Horgos, Ili Prefecture. The farmer stocked 2,445 poultry, among them, 1503 got sick and 463 died. After the outbreak, the local authorities in accordance with the relevant plans and technical requirements for prevention and control, do a good job in the handling of the epidemic situation, have smashed 11,910 poultry, all the sick and culled poultry have been harmless treatment.
