Woman dies from H5N6 avian flu in central China

        Source: Xinhua | November 21, 2016,

A woman died after contracting H5N6 avian flu in central China's Hunan province, local health authorities said Monday.

The woman, 47-year-old Luo, was a farmer from Shaoyang City. She was admitted to a local hospital last Friday when her health condition had already become critical, and died on Sunday, according to the Hunan provincial disease control center (CDC).

Luo had contact with dead poultry before she fell ill. No human-to-human transmission has been reported yet.

Experts from the CDC warned people who have had contact with live poultry to stay alert and for others to stay away from poultry and excrement.

CHP notified of human case of avian influenza A(H5N6) in Hunan
                  ************************************************** **

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health (DH) today (November 28) received notification of an additional human case of avian influenza A(H5N6) in Hunan from the National Health and Family Planning Commission, and again urged the public to maintain strict personal, food and environmental hygiene both locally and during travel.

The female patient aged 47 from Wugang developed symptoms on November 18 and was hospitalised. Her condition was critical at that time.

"Based on the seasonal pattern of avian influenza viruses, their activity in the Mainland is expected to increase in winter. The public should avoid contact with poultry, birds and their droppings and should not visit live poultry markets and farms to prevent avian influenza," a spokesman for the CHP said.

From 2014 to date, 15 human cases of avian influenza A(H5N6) have been reported by the Mainland health authorities.

"All novel influenza A infections, including H5N6, are notifiable infectious diseases in Hong Kong," the spokesman said.

"We will remain vigilant and work closely with the World Health Organization and relevant health authorities to monitor the latest developments," the spokesman said.
