TOUGH TALKING: Health and Family Welfare Minister R. Ashok (second from left) having a word with Deputy Commissioner Anjum Parvez at a meeting to review the situation arising out of the outbreak of leptospirosis and chikungunya in Gulbarga on Saturda y night.

GULBARGA: Health and Family Welfare Minister R. Ashok, who visited more than 20 villages in Shahapur, Jewargi, Chitapur taluks in the district affected by leptospirosis (rat fever) and chikungunya, on Saturday announced a series of measures initiated by the Government to contain the spread of the disease.

He said the Government has decided to cancel the leave sanctioned to all medical and paramedical staff in these areas to ensure that there is no shortage of doctors and staff in the hospitals. Mr. Ashok, who held a meeting with the senior officials till late in the evening on Saturday, took a serious view of the absence of medical and paramedical staff in the headquarters where they were posted and asked the District Health and Family Welfare Officer Panduranga Pujar to ensure that all the staff were available for emergency treatment.

He said the Government proposed to requisition doctors from the neighbouring districts to the affected villages to treat the affected people. The district administration and the District Health Officer should ensure that patients are not deprived of medicines in government hospitals and the practice of asking patients to buy medicines from outside should be stopped.

    Allocation doubled

Mr. Ashok said this year the Government has doubled the allocation to buy medicines from Rs. 20 crore to Rs. 40 crore. He said the Government has decided to introduce a system of displaying medicines available in the hospital storerooms in see-through cupboards for the benefit of patients. The hospital authorities will be asked to put it on the notice board the medicines available in the hospital. This system has been introduced in Bangalore on pilot basis and the same will be introduced in hospitals in the State.

About complaints from legislators on the failure to control the spread of the disease in the district, Mr. Ashok said the district administration should ensure systematic fogging operations inside and outside the house as per the specifications fixed and the civic authorities should take steps to prevent the breeding of mosquitoes by taking up cleaning operations of drains and clearing the collection of sewage on the roads.

On the shortage of specialist doctors in hospitals in the district, Mr. Ashok said the Government is considering the proposal by the High Power Committee for Redressal of Regional Imbalance headed by D.M. Nanjundappa that Rs. 3,000 should be paid extra to the specialist doctors who opt to work in backward districts.

Agriculture Marketing Minister Sharanabasappa Darshanapur, who accompanied Mr. Ashok in the tour of the affected villages, participated in the review meeting along with other legislators, including Sharanaprakash Patil, Vaijnath Patil, Sunil Valyapur and Raju Gowda.

Gulbarga Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Pankajkumar Pandey made a video presentation to the Minister about the situation of leptospirosis and chikungunya in the district. Deputy Commissioner Anjum Parvez was present.
