Saturday September 2 2006 12:46 IST MYSORE: The State Government is considering a Bill, making post graduate students of medical colleges serve compulsorily for two years in rural areas.

Health Minister R Ashok said this would be applicable to students who got PG seats through government quota. The Bill would be tabled in the ensuing Assembly session to make doctors serve in rural areas and to overcome dearth of specialists.

Speaking to mediapersons here on Friday, he said there are vacancies of specialists in 28 taluks and regretted that majority of them are hesitant to serve in rural areas despite the expense of Rs 15 to Rs 20 lakh incurred on PG studies by the government.

He said the dearth of specialists is the bottleneck for starting more medical colleges. ??We have decided to increase retirement age to 65 years for doctors,?? he added.

Ashok said he has appealed to the Union Health Ministry to set up a Viral Research Centre in Bangalore as the State and the whole country depends on the viral centres in Pune and Delhi.

The new viral centre will be set up in Nihmans campus and the Union Health Minister will personally inspect the campus before giving approval.

Ashok directed the Deputy Commissioner S Selva Kumar to identify and take stringent action against quacks. He said there are 5000 quacks in the State playing with the precious lives of innocent patients.

He observed that quacks are practising with impunity after chikungunya broke out in the State. Four cases of chikungunya has been confirmed from the 146 blood samples, and 2424 fever cases were reported in the district. Ashok also pulled up Chaluvamba hospital administrator Upiinala for shortage of drugs in store room.
