TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte, Jan 10 (PIA) -- A rare ailment similar to the dengue disease in its symptoms was reported by the Department of Health (DOH) in Eastern Visayas to have affected 263 persons in two remote villages in Villareal town in Samar.
Boyd Cerro, DOH regional sentinel nurse, disclosed that the Chikungunya disease discovered and which occurred in the reported town is the first ever to happen in the region.
The regional health department will conduct its own investigation on the occurrence of the disease which affected 235 residents of Banquil and 28 similar cases in Guintarcan, two remote villages in Villareal town.
The DOH also reported that the disease first occurred in December and the health office has yet to determine when the disease affected the residents of Banguil village.
It was reported that Chikungunya occurs abruptly and is so mild that the person hit by the disease seem to be unable to feel or recognized its impact. The disease while similar in symptoms to dengue fever, those afflicted suffer joint pains.
Cerro confirmed that of the 28 cases found in Guintarcan village, 12 of the cases were indeed Chinkungunyas based on the laboratory results from the Regional Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM).
It was learned that the carrier of the disease is a mosquito - Aedes aegypti - which is also the carrier of dengue fever. (EOPT/AJC/PIA 8)
