CURRENT AFFAIRSCRITICAL MEDICAL SUPPLIES COMING FOR TURK AND CAICOS ISLANDS

            Wed, Apr 08, 2020
By Hayden Boyce - Publisher and Editor-in-Chief

A large quantity of critical medical supplies to assist in fighting the coronavirus will very soon be in the Turks and Caicos Islands, His Excellency Governor Nigel Dakin told The SUN in an exclusive interview.

            These include:

            • 960 tests (10 kits of 96) have already been dispatched by courier and are arriving imminently (Sunday or before).

            And in terms of PPE

            • 7,080 Face Shields
            • 4,000 surgical masks
            • 12,000 gloves
            • 2,000 hoods
            • 12,000 gloves
            • 2,000 N95 masks
            • 6,700 Tyvek Overalls
            • 2,300 surgical gowns
            • 4,300 Shoe Covers
            • 2,300 Disposable Fluid Gowns

"It’s a large order and it will arrive in batches via courier," Governor Dakin said. "The 960 Tests have already left the UK and should be with us on Sunday. The same is true of the first large batch of PPE that includes (of the above total): 12,000x gloves, 880x face shields, 2,000x hoods, 2,300x surgical gowns. The second and third batch, with the balance, will be shipped week commencing 13 April."

The Governor added that along with other Caribbean Overseas territories, on-island Testing Facilities have been paid for by the UK and ordered from Thermofisher’s Caribbean distributor in Panama and will arrive here as soon as they leave the production line.

" We await a date. The sourcing of these, globally, has been fraught. Health remains a devolved issue for the Island and the Ministry of Health is leading on TCI’s procurement so this should be seen as the UK contribution," he added.
"The only security we have is our ability to adapt."

Active cases of Covid-19 drops, but suspected cases rises by two
                          May 08, 2020
THE NUMBER of people currently battling Covid-19 in the TCI has dropped one since last week to just four.

However, those suspected to have the virus and waiting on test results has risen from three to five people.

Statistics from the Ministry of Health on Thursday (May 7) revealed that the confirmed number of positive cases remains at 12 but eight people have now fully recovered.

One suspected case is under hospital care and there is still just one Covid-19 death recorded.

All the suspected cases are TCI residents experiencing relevant symptoms without a history of contact with confirmed cases.

They all met the World Health Organisation case definition for a suspected case of Covid-19.
