~ All ICU beds, ventilators in use by non-COVID-19 patients ~

PHILIPSBURG--Dutch St. Maarten’s confirmed coronavirus COVID-19 cases almost tripled on Tuesday with sixteen confirmed cases and with the first COVID-19 death recorded.

Prime Minister Silveria Jacobs said in a briefing late Tuesday evening that the person who died on Tuesday was a suspected case who was under self-isolation at home. No more details were provided on the individual who passed away, as she said additional information was not yet available.

News of the hike in confirmed cases comes amidst revelations that the only three Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds at St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) and hospital’s only two ventilators are already occupied by non-COVID-19 patients.

In explaining the figures, Jacobs said that of the 19 pending cases that had been recorded up to Monday, 10 were confirmed as positive, bringing the official numbers to 16...

DUTCH SIDE COVID-19 CASES NOW AT 23, 2ND DEATH OF SUSPECTED CASE RECORDED | THE DAILY HERALD
            18 men, 5 women positive ~

POND ISLAND–St. Maarten’s coronavirus COVID-19 cases jumped to 23 on Thursday as the country began ramping up testing due to local labs being given the green light to conduct tests with the possibility of having results the same day.

The 23 positive cases are 18 men and five women. News of increased testing came as a man who was highly suspected of having COVID-19 passed away at St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) on Thursday afternoon. If the deceased is eventually confirmed to have had COVID-19, this will bring the COVID-19 death toll on the Dutch side to two in three days. This second case was admitted to SMMC on Wednesday evening.

The first person, also a man, who passed away on Tuesday was a suspected case in self-isolation at home. This person has now been confirmed to have had COVID-19 and is officially registered as the first death attributed to the highly infectious virus.

The COVID-19 stats as of April 11.

CAY HILL--Three new patients who are highly suspected of having contracted the coronavirus COVID-19 were admitted to St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) on Friday night. The three patients include one person from Saba and all three are in stable condition. The three new hospitalizations bring the total number of COVID-19 related patients (suspected and confirmed) at SMMC, to four. One patient remains in critical condition.

Prime Minister and Chairperson of the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) Silveria Jacobs said in a national address on Saturday evening that there had not been much changes in the remaining COVID-19 figures. There are 136 persons in self quarantine; 194 in self isolation (persons with symptoms); 134 tested; 50 positive (34 males and 16 females); 82 negative; 4 pending results (three of whom are hospitalized) and one case is inconclusive. A total of five persons have recovered from the virus and nine have passed away.

Jacobs said authorities had been unable to engage in testing locally as “not enough” testing kits are available and the kits that had been expected to arrive in the country on Saturday did not come as expected. She did not say when they are now expected to arrive and how many are expected. As a result, tests are currently being sent to Guadeloupe.

SABA--Saba has recorded its first confirmed case of coronavirus COVID-19, said Island Governor Jonathan Johnson in an address on Saturday evening. In response, the island will go on a two-week mandatory lock-down as of 12:00am Sunday, April 12.

“Over the past weeks we have been working together with the aim of preventing COVID-19 from being introduced to the island. Despite all of the precautionary measures taken, this evening I have to inform you, that one of the three tests taken has returned as positive,” said Johnson.

The positive test is not the patient who was medically evacuated to St. Maarten on Friday with a severe case of pneumonia, said Johnson. “[The positive case – Ed.] was one of the other two taken from persons on island … The patient who is positive is experiencing mild symptoms and is doing well. We are still waiting for the second test to return for the patient in St. Maarten and for the results of the third person tested,” he said.

According to Johnson, the positive case is considered to be of local transmission, as this person has no travel history within the past several weeks. This indicates that the virus has already been introduced to the island and it is possible that more cases could follow.

“We have had many measures in place since March 16, with the intention that if something like this did occur, that the spread would be limited. But because of this new development, further measures will be implemented which will help contain the spread of the virus,” said Johnson.

He announced that as of 12:00am Sunday, Saba will go on a mandatory two-week lock-down. “This new measure is being taken to ensure your safety and the health of our community. We know that this may be inconvenient, but it is necessary that we take these measures to ensure that we contain the spread of this virus,” said Johnson.
