  • El Salvador: Ministry of Health is studying death for suspected H1N1 and increase of the influenza

The Ministry of Health (BPH) is vigilant before a rise in reported cases of influenza A H1N1. "Today will be an audit that could become the first confirmed death by H1N1" informed Queen Hern?ndez, member of the medical unit of Health Surveillance. The death of a male patient of 36 years, originating in the Department of Peace, is the one that is maintained in study. The patient died on October 23. Hernandez explained that he had already been addressed on several occasions by pneumonia and, among other conditions, had a history of smoking. In the last few weeks the confirmed cases of influenza H1N1 have begun to increase. Hernandez said that throughout the first half of the year there were no recorded patient for this type of virus. In contrast there was a greater circulation of influenza H3N2 and the respiratory syncytial virus, which affects more than all the babies. "But apparently with the change in season has also changed the circulation of the virus," he said.

Until the last week, Health reported 37 patients by H1N1. The figure is less than last year when there were 211 cases and six deaths confirmed. El Salvador is not the only country in the region where it has started to register a greater circulation of the virus H1N1. In Guatemala, inasmuch as it has been reported five deaths related to the virus during recent weeks.
