    The constant climate changes, which manifest themselves in Honduras with heavy rains have caused a significant increase in cases of pneumonia.

    This is the reality we live at the National Institute Cardiopulmonary (Chest).

    This medical center recorded a hundred percent increase in pneumonia patients, minors being most affected.

    Pneumonia is a respiratory condition in which inflammation of the lung. It is caused by bacteria, viruses and fungi.

    "What has most influenced the increase in cases of patients with respiratory infections is the arrival of the rainy season," said Patricia Ochoa, an epidemiologist at the cardiopulmonary center.

    According to measurements provided by the professional, in 2010 have been treated 459 cases of pneumonia, compared to 227 in the same period last year.

    The highest rates occur among adults, but children develop more infections, whose condition has to be hospitalized, the other cases are handled with outpatient care.

    Influenza

    Patricia Ochoa also referred to cases of influenza seen in the current year. He said that they were not serious.

    Recently it has been sampled only two suspected cases of H1N1, the same has been handled as outpatients.

    "The H1N1 virus has become more of a virus circulating in Honduras, but not in epidemic form as in the previous year," he said
