Authorities confirm first case of coronavirus in Panama
    By Cinthia Almanza
    03/09/2020 - 8:35 PM

Panamanian authorities confirmed the first case of coronavirus in the country.

"After applying all the WHO protocols we can confirm the first case of COVID-19 in our country," confirmed the President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo in his Twitter account.

"As we have been among the most efficient countries in its prevention, we are prepared to face and treat COVID-19," Cortizo added.

This is a 40-year-old Panamanian citizen who arrived in the country, Health Minister Rosario Turner confirmed.

The infected woman is Panamanian and entered the country on Sunday afternoon, March 8, from the city of Barajas, Spain. "He is at home stably and does not need to be hospitalized," Turner said.

Who turned out to be the first case of the coronavirus outbreak in Panama, attended the Social Security Fund, after having entered the country with a cough and fever.

“We are contacting the people who came on the plane with the Spanish citizen who tested positive for Covid-19. Spain was not among the countries that passed controls at the airport, ”said the minister.

"We have detected in an early way this first case what calls us to calm. To all I reiterate, we reinforce the hygiene measures and follow the instructions of the Minsa," said Cortizo, while Turner with other authorities held a press conference on the subject at the headquarters of the National Police, in the Panamanian capital.

The woman has contact at home with two people, who will be tested and quarantined, Turner said.

The head of Health said that at the moment the classes will not be suspended, because it is only a confirmed case.

He said that he will keep a very close watch, "one thing is when you have a case, another when there is a conglomerate and another when you have an entire affected country," he said.

He added that anyone who has a respiratory condition should avoid, as far as possible, leave their residence and not make trips abroad if they are not strictly necessary.

On the realization of fair events, Turner said that some are evaluated like David's.

40 tests have been performed for suspected cases of coronaviruses in the country. A total of 112 regions of the virus have confirmed cases of coronaviruses in their territories.

Number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 increases to 43
      By Drafting of TVN News
      03/14/2020 - 6:48 PM

The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 increases to 43, 23 women and 20 men, as reported on Saturday March 14 by the National Director of Health, Nadja Porcell, during a press conference. Five people are hospitalized, two in critical condition. A total of 37 people are kept in home isolation.

In the Panama West region a case is added in the community of Las Lajas, and in Panama North a new case was reported in the community of Alcalde D?az.

In total, 820 tests have been carried out, of which 43 have been positive and 40 are still pending. Porcell stressed that more than 200 teachers from the Monsignor Francisco Beckmann College have been tested, and that they have not found any more positive cases.

Tests have been carried out on 4,535 travelers, of which 3,104 people have been discharged and 1,431 are kept in home follow-up.

The director of Civil Aviation, Gustavo P?rez, confirmed the suspension of flights to and from Europe, previously announced by the President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo, on his official Twitter account.

The chancellor, Alejandro Ferrer, pointed out that humanitarian flights and flights that are necessary to bring medicines, equipment and medical supplies will be excepted.

Ferrer announced that a working group with airlines is being created so that Panamanians who are abroad and Europeans who are in Panama can travel for the next few days and return to their countries of origin.

Luis Francisco Sucre, deputy minister of Health, announced the creation of a National Diagnostic Network COVID-19, which will be in charge of the director of the Gorgas Commemorative Institute, Juan Pascale. The goal will be to guarantee access to laboratory tests for people who need them.

The hospitals enabled for the tests will be the San Miguel Arc?ngel Hospital, the Children's Hospital, the Hospital Complex of the Arnulfo Arias Social Security Fund Madrid, the National Oncological Institute, the Nicol?s A. Solano Hospital, the Cecilio Castillero Hospital, the "Chicho" F?brega Hospital, and the Jos? Domingo de Obald?a Hospital. The hospitals and executing units of the Social Security Fund (CSS) will also be in a position to carry out the tests.

The Ministry of Health (Minsa) reported that it has added 20 doctors and nurses to support the authorities in home visits to people under observation for presenting symptoms of the disease.

Together with the Ministry of Security (Minseg), the Minsa will increase the number of operations to verify compliance with the executive decree issued to regulate acts and events that promote the crowding of people.

The director of the CSS, Enrique Lau Cort?s, emphasized the importance that all citizens collaborate and be in solidarity with prevention measures. It asks the population to avoid mobilizing and taking the disease to other places.

"Success depends on everyone. It requires the solidarity, discipline and commitment of all of us," emphasized Lau Cort?s. "We are not on vacation, the country faces a dangerous situation. By mobilizing, one is taking the disease to other places or running the risk of contracting it," he added.

The conference was held virtually, to safeguard the health of journalists, who sent their questions remotely.

The death toll in Panama from the Covid-19 virus has risen to three and the contagion to 245.

The Panamanian Health authorities reported, in a press conference, the deaths and the new number of infected. In 24 hours the positive cases rose from 200 to 245.

There are 33 hospitalized patients, of whom 21 are in the ward (8.6%) and 12 are in the Intensive Care Unit (5%). And 209 people are in home isolation (85%). 2,473 tests have been carried out, of which 228 were negative (90%).

Panama reported the first death from Covid-19 on March 11, one day after confirming the first case.

The first death was from a teacher, the second from a doctor, and the third case was not detailed. The deaths were recorded on Friday, March 20, but were not announced until the afternoon of this Saturday.

Luis Francisco Sucre explained, vice minister of Health, that a sanitary fence has been installed in Herrera, Los Santos. In addition, in Guabal? and Vigu?, Chiriqu? province.

The authorities keep track of false calls they receive at number 169. They also keep track of false emails, messages and information that are irresponsibly distributed through digital channels, raising alarm among the population.

Sucre warned that if the population does not take the measures, the government will be taking stronger measures.

Enrique Lau Cort?s, director of the Social Security Fund, reported that the epidemiological fence of the Ezequiel Abad?a Hospital has been completed and the cases of COVID-19 identified there and his direct contacts are in house isolation under verification.

The Minister of Public Security, Juan Pino, explained that 475 people were arrested nationwide, which includes 41 minors at the last curfew. "We ask the population to comply with the curfew," said the security minister.

Likewise, the MINSA communicates that, starting today, it joins the Health Emergency Operations Center (CODES), the Panama Red Cross, an entity that will support the actions undertaken by the "Protect yourself Panama" Plan.

Washing hands, social isolation and following the recommended biosanitary protection measures are, until now, the most effective actions against the spread of the virus.

                      Appointment of doctors

The Vice Minister of Health, Luis Francisco Sucre, said that the coverage of the service network has been expanded and 57 appointments have been made for Panamanian specialists and general medicine.

He added that to date 98 nurses have been appointed.
Repudiation of assault on police and FTC members

The vice minister also spoke with displeasure and outrage about the group of Panamanians who have attacked members of the security forces and the Joint Task Force (FTC), to defend people who have breached the decrees.

"The Joint Task Force, health teams and other organizations do not deserve to be attacked under any circumstances, to protect people who irresponsibly put their lives and that of other Panamanians at risk," he stressed.

                      Three positive nurses

The director of the Social Security Fund (CSS), Enrique Lau Cort?s said that with the help of the Panama Fire Department, the cleaning of the Susana Jones Hospital was carried out, a total and comprehensive disinfection to receive patients who do not have the new coronavirus and suffer from other pathologies.

Meanwhile, the surveillance system detected three nurses who tested positive for COVID-19, in the delivery room of the CSS Hospital Complex and 25 contacts.

He added that the delivery room was closed to be carried out at the Susana Jones Hospital.

Cases will increase if they do not follow recommendations

The authorities expressed their concern that the epidemiological peak, in approximately 15 days, reaches a number of patients that is higher than the system's capacity to attend to it.

They have asked that people put aside "he plays live" and are not evading isolation.

                      569 people held

Ivor Pitt?, vice minister of Security, said that 569 people have been detained in the last 24 hours, for violating the total quarantine, 539 are of legal age and 30 minors.

In this sense, Lau Cort?s made a strong call to the patients to be responsible and said that an official with his card and with clear symptoms of COVID-19 moved from Panama to Penonom?, contaminating everything that was around him.
