The Government launched a new format for the epidemiological report: pre-recorded videos and no space for questions

The Ministry of Health (Minsa) confirmed this Friday 150 new infections, which add up to a cumulative of 9,268 cases of Covid-19 in Panama.

According to the latest updates from the authorities, to date there have been 266 deaths from the new coronavirus.

In a new format for press conferences, in which a prerecorded video was presented and where there was no space for questions, the director of epidemiology of the Minsa, Lourdes Moreno, presented the figures for Covid-19 to date.

A total of 47,768 tests have been applied, of which 10,947 have given positive and 36,821 negative. This translates to date in 11,165 tests for every million inhabitants.

Moreno also indicated that of the total number of patients, 2,568 are in home isolation, 744 in hotels, 281 hospitalized in the ward and 73 in the intensive care unit (ICU).

      'Transparent' purchases

The Minister of Health, Rosario Turner, gave an explanation of the process of acquiring medical supplies and equipment in the face of the health emergency.

Presenting himself also under the new conference scheme, with no questions asked, Turner pointed out that the purchases made by the Executive were made in response to the projections that the Minsa and its advisers initially handled. By March 13, they calculated in the worst case scenario between 25,000 to 102,000 cases and 987 people simultaneously in the ICU.
"Given this bleak picture, and to avoid the overflow of hospital infrastructure and have the necessary supplies, the priority was set to acquire them as soon as possible",
      Rosario Turner
      Minister of Health of Panama

Turner said he gave the Ministry of the Presidency the requirements for the purchase, which would include: the reference price, the local suppliers that offered the supplies and equipment, as well as the technical sheets. The acquisitions, he says, were made taking into account the estimates prepared in March, which considered the "worst case scenario".

"The Minsa received all the required supplies and distributed them, among others, to public and private hospitals, health centers, Sinaproc personnel throughout the country, volunteers from the Panama Solidarity program, the National Police, collection centers in Atlapa, Divisa and Chiriqu?, hotels-hospital, walkers who distribute solidarity bags and vouchers, to the Single System of Prehospital Emergency Management, "said the Minister of Health.

In addition, he stressed that the resources received "passed" the filter of the entity's Technical Commission.

"We want to make it very clear that the available reports from the Comptroller General of the Republic indicate that the Ministry of the Presidency has not made any payment for said medical equipment or supplies," he said.

In recent months, the purchase of medical supplies and expenses in the midst of the pandemic have been surrounded by controversy due to high prices and alleged irregularities.

The most recent scandal, the attempt to acquire 100 fans at a much higher price than the market, ended with the resignation of the Vice Minister of the Presidency, Juan Carlos Mu?oz.

On this case, the Public Ministry and the Public Prosecutor's Office announced the opening of an investigation, after it became known of alleged cost overruns in said purchase, for an amount of $ 5.2 million dollars and that was carried out under the emergency decree by the Covid-19.

Panama exceeds 11,000 cases of COVID-19 and accumulates 310 deaths

Panama, May 25 (EFE) .- Panama exceeded 11,000 cases of contagion by COVID-19 on Monday since the first was detected on March 9, and accumulated 310 deaths from the disease, according to its health authorities.

The Panamanian Ministry of Health reported this Monday of 4 more deaths and 257 new cases of the disease, to total 310 deaths and 11,183 confirmed infections.

There are 348 patients hospitalized throughout the country, 281 in the ward and 67 in the intensive care units, in addition to 4,246 people remaining in home isolation, of whom 582 are in hotels that provisionally function as hospitals.

In the last 24 hours, 6,279 recovered from the disease were reported, while deaths according to age range continue to be concentrated in people who are over 60 years old (223).

Regarding the detection tests for transmission by COVID-19, a total of 59,339 have been carried out in Panama, of which 77% were negative and the remaining 23% positive, which include first and second samples to confirm or rule out the infection.

The tests per million inhabitants amount to 13,869, with 1,099 carried out in the last 24 hours.

Health authorities acknowledged that in recent days there has been an imbalance in terms of the accumulated number of tests actually carried out, which was due to the fact that the state Social Security Fund (CSS) did not receive a team in time.

The CSS "was not given the equipment (and supplies) at the time there was a commitment" to supply the data, which "brought a number of laboratory tests that were not recorded," the company told reporters Monday. Panamanian Minister of Health, Rosario Turner.

"Precisely with the transparency that we have wanted to handle this we have come out to say that there are 1,400 that are pending reporting," he added.

Panama, the country with the most cases and deaths in Central America due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has been in indefinite quarantine since March 25, which limits the mobility of the population by gender and two hours a day.

On May 13, the first of six phases or blocks of economic revival in the country began - which closed its non-essential activities in the second week of March - with online commercial sales, technical services and automotive mechanics, and fishing.

For the second block, which will affect construction, industry and non-metallic mining, as well as activities in sports and social areas and churches, there is still no date. EFE
