The Nicaraguan Ministry of Health (Minsa) has authorized tests to detect covid-19 for people who want to travel outside the country, at a cost of $ 150, according to a statement published on July 17. Almost four months after the confirmation of the first case of covid-19 in Nicaragua, the health authorities have refused to carry out massive tests in the country to know the behavior of the pandemic, and have ignored calls from specialists and the private sector.

As detailed in the statement that was published on its website, the tests will be performed at the National Center for Diagnosis and Reference (CNDR), the only laboratory that is currently allowed to carry out PCR tests. These tests will be done at a time of 8:00 a.m. at 11:00 a.m. The results would be delivered the same day in the late afternoon, between 4:00 p.m. at 5:00 p.m.

Since March 18, the day the first case was reported, the Nicaraguan Government has received as a donation more than 30,000 tests and reagents to diagnose SARS-CoV-2. And as reported this Wednesday, the Superior Council of the Private Company (COSEP), the State will buy 100,000 more tests, medicines and laboratory supplies.

Nicaragua has received more than 30,000 tests for covid-19, where are they?

It is unknown if this purchase will be made with the money donated by allied organizations and countries that have given resources to the country to attend to the spread of the pandemic in these months.
    Travelers may make cash payment

Those who wish to request the tests to travel must present their identification card or passport, in addition they will have to present the ticket or flight itinerary. And they will be able to deposit the $ 150 in the Production Bank (Banpro) either in dollars to account 10010012253774 or c?rdobas to account 10010002253784 registered under the name: TGR-MINSA.

Also, cash payments will be received in the general cashier of the "Conchita" Palacios National Health Complex.

According to the Health authorities, this decision was made "at the request of people who are going to travel to other countries and who are requiring them to have a negative COVID-19 test." However, the statement was released three days after they published the income protocol for national and foreign travelers, which now requires tourists traveling to Nicaragua to present a negative test for covid-19, carried out over a period of time. not more than 72 hours.
Government has refused to review evidence

Since the virus arrived in the country, the Nicaraguan government has refused to carry out massive tests on the population, which, according to the doctors, would help to identify the sources of contagion and make pertinent decisions to stop the contagion. In addition, that the authorities have refused to reveal the number of tests that they have done and have limited the amount of tests to people who present several of the symptoms of the disease.

Even the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) recently said that although they have trained CNDR laboratory personnel to carry out tests, they have not received any information on the number of tests carried out and processed.

"Testing, together with isolation and contact tracing, have been the cornerstone of the strategy to deal with the pandemic," said scientist Jorge Huete, doctor in molecular biology.
