The journalist Gustavo Bermudez died at 65
Nicaraguan journalist Gustavo Berm?dez died with symptoms of COVID-19, but his death was attributed to pneumonia.
The mornings of the Nicaraguan radio station Radio Corporaci?n will not be the same due to the unexpected departure of one of its most vehement informative voices.
The journalist Gustavo Berm?dez, director of the radio program Impacto 540, died Tuesday of this week at age 65, after presenting respiratory distress and other symptoms similar to those related to COVID-19.
During the funeral that took place quickly in Managua, his family explained to the Voice of America that the death certificate establishes that the cause of his death was "acute respiratory failure", the product of severe atypical pneumonia. However, they affirm that it is COVID-19.
"The record said that he died of atypical pneumonia and other ailments. At no time do they say it was COVID, despite the fact that after he was admitted to the hospital and they tested him, he tested positive. Why are they coming with such a lie now? ”Asked her sister, A?da Rita Berm?dez, during the express funeral.
Burial of Gustavo Berm?dez
Journalist Gustavo Berm?dez was quickly buried, according to government directives for the coronavirus pandemic.
The journalist's death is seen as a great loss not only for one of the oldest and most important radio stations in Nicaragua, but for the entire country, says veteran radio businessman Fabio Gadea Mantilla, a former presidential candidate and director of Radio Corporaci?n, to the VOA.
Berm?dez began presenting respiratory symptoms two weeks ago, and it is for this reason that he stopped attending the program he directed for almost three consecutive decades.
His health was complicated during the last days and the doctors argued that it was due to other clinical pictures that were also denied by his family.
“It is certainly a great loss. He was one of our best journalists. An opinion generator, interviewer, with a great voice. Through the program it had, it reached many Nicaraguans. He is irreplaceable, ”added Fabio Gadea Mantilla to the VOA.
The Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), Edison Lanzas, mourned the journalist's death and the lack of measures implemented by the government of President Daniel Ortega to protect reporters.
"It is sad that another journalist dies in the midst of the pandemic and it weighs on us more because the state has not taken any protection measure, and would be denying him his diagnosis," Lanzas wrote on his Twitter account.
