The journalist Gustavo Bermudez died at 65
Nicaraguan journalist Gustavo Berm?dez died with symptoms of COVID-19, but his death was attributed to pneumonia.

The mornings of the Nicaraguan radio station Radio Corporaci?n will not be the same due to the unexpected departure of one of its most vehement informative voices.

The journalist Gustavo Berm?dez, director of the radio program Impacto 540, died Tuesday of this week at age 65, after presenting respiratory distress and other symptoms similar to those related to COVID-19.

During the funeral that took place quickly in Managua, his family explained to the Voice of America that the death certificate establishes that the cause of his death was "acute respiratory failure", the product of severe atypical pneumonia. However, they affirm that it is COVID-19.

"The record said that he died of atypical pneumonia and other ailments. At no time do they say it was COVID, despite the fact that after he was admitted to the hospital and they tested him, he tested positive. Why are they coming with such a lie now? ”Asked her sister, A?da Rita Berm?dez, during the express funeral.

    Burial of Gustavo Berm?dez
Journalist Gustavo Berm?dez was quickly buried, according to government directives for the coronavirus pandemic.

The journalist's death is seen as a great loss not only for one of the oldest and most important radio stations in Nicaragua, but for the entire country, says veteran radio businessman Fabio Gadea Mantilla, a former presidential candidate and director of Radio Corporaci?n, to the VOA.

Berm?dez began presenting respiratory symptoms two weeks ago, and it is for this reason that he stopped attending the program he directed for almost three consecutive decades.

His health was complicated during the last days and the doctors argued that it was due to other clinical pictures that were also denied by his family.

“It is certainly a great loss. He was one of our best journalists. An opinion generator, interviewer, with a great voice. Through the program it had, it reached many Nicaraguans. He is irreplaceable, ”added Fabio Gadea Mantilla to the VOA.

The Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), Edison Lanzas, mourned the journalist's death and the lack of measures implemented by the government of President Daniel Ortega to protect reporters.

"It is sad that another journalist dies in the midst of the pandemic and it weighs on us more because the state has not taken any protection measure, and would be denying him his diagnosis," Lanzas wrote on his Twitter account.

    - May 28, 2020

Managua, May 28 (vostv.com.ni) .- As the coronavirus pandemic in Nicaragua progresses, six journalists with symptoms similar to those of Covid-19 are reported so far; one of them in critical condition and admitted to a capital hospital and receiving oxygen.

This information was confirmed by the organization Independent Journalists and Communicators of Nicaragua (PCIN), who will raise an alert before international organizations, such as the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), so that they turn their gaze to Nicaraguan journalism and support with determination the country.

Julio L?pez, director of the PCIN, indicated that it is necessary to provide the media with all the necessary tools and means of protection to carry out work on the street.

L?pez pointed out that it is pertinent to continue with the coverage tasks physically, but in certain cases it can also be monitored through the use of information and communication technologies.

“That is why we have asked our colleagues to take strict measures, stay at home and from there carry out their work, but in case they have to go out they must use protective glasses, masks and alcohol gel for constant hand washing, if they are not in the right to demand them from their bosses, ”said L?pez.

One of the six journalists with Covid-19 symptoms is Emiliano Chamorro, director of the digital media outlet Portavoz Ciudadano, an independent media outlet founded after being out of a job.

Chamorro's relatives started a campaign through social networks to collect money and cover their medical expenses in a private clinic in the face of the collapse in the country's public hospitals.

Chamorro was diagnosed with serious lung problems from the new coronavirus.

“I have two weeks of being like this, they are problems in the lungs. I can only ask them to protect themselves, we do not believe ourselves to be strong, sometimes we believe that we are made of iron, but no, we are vulnerable and we must all take care of ourselves, ”Chamorro said by telephone.

Also, the director of the Article 66 media outlet, ?lvaro Navarro, has been affected by Covid-19.

In the afternoon hours of Wednesday, Navarro had been admitted to the Monte Espa?a Hospital, where he remains on oxygen.

Article 66 reported that Navarro presented serious respiratory disturbances, so he deserved to be transferred urgently.

"A week ago Navarro began to feel body pain, fever, cough and tiredness," wrote the digital media outlet.

"The doctor in charge of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) area tells us that ?lvaro Navarro has shown an improvement in oxygen saturation," Geovanny Shiffman, a journalist for this media outlet, wrote on his Twitter account.

The coronavirus pandemic has already claimed the life of a journalist, this is the renowned communicator Gustavo Berm?dez, director of the Impact 540 program that is broadcast on Radio Corporaci?n.
