The Nicaraguan regime confirmed in the last week 359 new cases and nine more died from COVID-19, a balance that continues to be questioned by opposition organizations but which Daniel Ortega has used in recent months to defend his management capacity against the pandemic.

According to data from the regime's Ministry of Health, updated this Tuesday, Nicaragua has registered 1,823 positives and 64 fatalities to date. The Citizen Observatory, created to evaluate the evolution of the pandemic from independent sources, speaks instead of almost 5,000 infected and about 1,400 deceased.


The newspaper La Prensa, related to the opposition, also stressed that the official balance sheets released once a week by the Government would not fit the evolution curve of an outbreak like this, since after several weeks of constant growth - 25 it went to 245 and then to 480 weekly infections - the data is more contained.

The Nicaraguan regime has not adopted special measures to prevent the spread of the virus. Faced with this, civil society organizations, including medical associations, have appealed to the "self-care" of Nicaraguans.

Three months after the arrival of the covid-19 pandemic in the country, the number of deaths from coronavirus, according to the latest data collected by the Citizen Observatory COVID-19, exceeds 1,398 deaths. An amount 72% greater than that projected by the Ministry of Health, last February, when it predicted that in a period of six months, at least 813 infected Nicaraguans would die from the new coronavirus.

Covid testing still needed

The underlying problem in the figures on the behavior of the pandemic lies in the lack of evidence and in the government's insistence on not sharing the real situation of infections and the capacity of hospitals. Since the start of the pandemic in the country, epidemiologists and health professionals recommended that massive tests be carried out and also suggested severe containment measures such as quarantine, but none of these were carried out.

"The tests will serve to know the level of circulation that he (covid-19) has in the country and to know what scenario we may face. We still have inhabitants who have not been exposed to contagion, that is, we do not yet know how they will react. The tests and the evidence from the statistics are what would define the decisions to contain the spread of the pandemic, would serve to make projections that provide a better scenario for Nicaraguans. However, the reality of the country is that even weekly reports are not enough to analyze the behavior of the pandemic.

“For me, that notification should be daily, if you give me a figure of a week or two, you cannot observe a behavior. And you have to keep track of the behavior to relate it to other factors, such as crowds. For example, if there were more cases on the weekend or if there is a drop when classes are suspended. You have to be observing and monitoring the effect of the measures you are taking, it is not just throwing a number once a week, "adds the expert.

Covid-19 deaths will increase

After three months from the first reported case, specialists agree that in the worst case scenario, if more drastic measures are not taken, positive cases and deaths from covid-19 will continue to increase.

"The situation is tragic because there is a natural evolution of the disease. For the time being, it is very likely that the epidemic peak will remain. Projections say this could last about two months or more. How long can that take? We do not know because what has been seen is that when confinement measures begin to be imposed in four or six weeks, the curve can be flattened and the number of infections reduced, "says Dr. Quant.

However, he cautions that the state reaction to covid-19 is similar to when the Zika or Chikungunya epidemic occurred that the outbreak lasted for several months until the majority of the population became infected and developed immunity. But, what this would cause would be a high number of deaths.

For his part, Dr. Ram?rez believes that the government's inaction is due to his strategy of showing normality so that the economic impact is less.
