While much of the world has instituted lockdowns or heavily restricted movement and economic activity in response to the coronavirus pandemic, Nicaragua remains an island of inaction in Central America and the broader Latin American region. President Daniel Ortega and Vice President (and first lady) Rosario Murillo have downplayed the seriousness of the coronavirus and its potentially devastating health impacts, continuing to hold large-scale public events, while nationwide control by the ruling Sandinista National Liberation Front forestalls action by local leaders.

Only a single Nicaraguan has officially died of the COVID-19 disease, but Nicaraguan health professionals worry that cases are drastically underreported. This anomalous response is an effort to project normality by an authoritarian regime, even after Ortega himself disappeared without explanation for over a month. Ortega finally emerged for a rambling April 15 speech broadcast after hours of delays, leading to suspicions it was previously recorded and being edited. Over 30 minutes, Ortega touted Nicaragua’s health system and preparedness, listed off all the other causes of death of Nicaraguans beyond the sole official COVID-19 death, attacked militarization and imperialism—saying arms spending should go to health care instead—and argued that he can’t order Nicaraguans to stay home, because “if this country stops working, it dies.” Attendees sat close together, and no one wore masks. Ortega and Murillo shook hands with and embraced everyone afterward, Murillo kissing cheeks and then touching her face.

The deaths by Covid-19 today April 18 in Nicaragua reach 2
The new victim is a man, 64 years old, who today presented an acute and unexpected complication that, along with other chronic conditions that he already had, led to his death
      By EFE April 18, 2020

Managua.- A 64-year-old man became the second person to die of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in Nicaragua on Saturday, accumulating nine positive cases, the Ministry of Health (Minsa) reported.

The patient, contact of an imported case, presented this morning an acute and unexpected complication that, along with other chronic conditions that he already had, led to his death, explained the secretary general of the Minsa, Carlos S?enz, when reading the report before official media .

The sixty-year-old died in a private center where he had been cared for since April 7, he said.

The health authorities officially reported that case, number eight of the nine confirmed, three days later, that is, on April 10, and at the time he was "delicate, attended and stable."

      AN ACTIVE COVID-19 CASE

The official said that since March 11, when the pandemic was declared, two people have been registered, both with previous illnesses.

On March 26, the government confirmed its first deceased, a 48-year-old Nicaraguan who had traveled to Colombia and "had multiple health weaknesses associated with his condition as a carrier of the HIV virus."

The official noted that of the nine confirmed cases, two have died and only one 59-year-old man remains infected with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus (causing the COVID-19 disease) and is "stable and cared for."

The rest, he added, have been discharged, although twelve other suspicious people are under observation.

Nicaraguan Health authorities have stressed that all cases have been imported, that is, there have been no cases of local community transmission.

However, the government chaired by the Sandinista Daniel Ortega has not specified the number of tests it has carried out so far.

The Executive has also been criticized by various sectors for promoting massive events and crowds against the current recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Nicaragua, unlike the rest of the countries of Central America, has not decreed any type of emergency due to the pandemic, nor has it ordered the suspension of classes, although now schoolchildren are on vacation for Easter.

Nor has it officially restricted the entry or mobility into its territory to any traveler and its authorities have said that they will not establish any type of quarantine.

Confirmed third deceased by covid-19 in Nicaragua and announced case 11
              Ivette Mungu?a
              April 23, 2020

A 58-year-old man, confirmed by the Government as the tenth case of covid-19 in Nicaragua, just three days ago, died this Thursday morning of the pandemic, being the third person killed by covid-19 in Nicaragua.

The secretary of the Ministry of Health (Minsa), Carlos S?enz, said in an exclusive press conference for official media, that the Nicaraguan was a diabetic and hypertensive patient, who "presented this morning with an acute and unexpected complication, which, unfortunately, led to his death".

Although some national media have said that this tenth case was a doctor from the Bertha Calder?n Hospital, in Managua, unofficial sources assured CONFIDENCIAL that it is actually a worker from the Augusto C. Sandino International Airport, who was transferred to the Japan Hospital -Nicaragua, from Granada, on Sunday, April 19, although the Minsa confirmed the case until the following day.

"We have been since March 11, then, three brothers died from previous health complications, added to the covid-19," said the official, in keeping with the official attempt to try to minimize the pandemic. In addition, it is striking that he said March 11, despite the fact that the first contagion was confirmed on the 18th of that month and the first death on the 26th. This, however, is not the first time that Minsa has erred in the data, They are also widely questioned for their hermetic handling and lack of transparency.

They announce ninth case and maintain a whimsical count

The authorities of the Ministry of Health also confirmed on the morning of this Thursday, April 23, the eleventh case: a 68-year-old man, "contact with an imported case", which they affirm "is delicate and stable."

The Minsa continued its “fancy” count, also criticized by health experts and members of civil society, since the Government subtracts positive cases daily without providing explanations about the handling of the figures. The contradiction has even occurred with the second death confirmed by the Government, which corresponded to a 64-year-old man who had already been removed from the list of active cases.

Similar occurs with the "suspicious cases", of which the Government hardly of a number that adds and subtracts without specifying its "method".

“Yesterday, we had 12 people in responsible and careful monitoring. Of these, 3 people have complied with the regulatory period, who are now under house protection. There are, therefore, 9 people left, to which 6 more are added today, for a total, this morning, of 15 people in care and responsible and permanent monitoring, "said S?enz.

The Government has also not explained what the terms "responsible and careful follow-up" mean, although it follows that they are cases hospitalized in different centers, since the other term of "going to housekeeping" would indicate that they are discharged persons.

Nicaragua reports a new confirmed case of COVID-19 and reaches twelve
                EFE - Managua
                04/25/2020 - 21: 08h

The Government of Nicaragua reported on Saturday a new confirmed case of COVID-19, to total 12 since it reported the entry of the pandemic into the country, in mid-March, with the death toll of three.

The new confirmed case is "a 64-year-old person," the Ministry of Health (Minsa) said in a statement, in which it did not provide further information about the patient.

Nicaraguan authorities did mention that the person with COVID-19 is in a "delicate but stable state", without providing further specifications.

According to official information, in Nicaragua there are currently two people with COVID-19, including a 68-year-old man, "who is stable and being treated."

Likewise, the Ministry of Health reported that a total of 15 people are under "permanent and responsible care and monitoring", without specifying whether they are suspected cases of COVID-19.

The Minsa, which did not refer to the way in which patient number 12 was infected with COVID-19, stressed that in Nicaragua "we do not have local community transmission."

The Nicaraguan Government has a policy without restrictions against the pandemic, nor does it establish social prevention measures, despite contradicting the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO), although it does affirm to follow up and monitor its spread .

Additionally, the Nicaraguan authorities promote massive activities, which are attended by Sandinista militants, who are subsequently sent to make house-to-house visits.

The actions, which President Daniel Ortega has claimed, have been a cause of concern for the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), and the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (IACHR).

Ortega explained that the priority is to keep the country's economy active, that this 2020 celebrates three years in recession, after the 2018 anti-government outbreak, in which hundreds of protesters died, disappeared or were arrested, and more than 100,000 had to flee the exile.

Medical sources unofficially informed 100% Noticias that a Manolo Morales doctor entered a private hospital in Managua as a suspected case of coronavirus.

The doctor underwent the covid-19 test, awaiting the results that the Sandinista Health Ministry will provide.

The doctor is a specialist in neurology at Manolo Morales, but also attends a private hospital, where he is hospitalized awaiting the results, medical sources reported. The police presence at the entrance to the Manolo Morales hospital was notorious on Tuesday, which is unusual.

Last Sunday, April 26, an adult patient older than 77 years of age, who tested positive for coronavirus, entered another private hospital; however hours later, the Sandinista minsa changed the diagnosis to "indeterminate," a medical source told 100% Noticias.

Private hospitals asked the MINSA for authorization to perform coronavirus tests, however the health authorities never authorized it, therefore they are the only ones that can carry out such tests, which opens up the possibility of underreporting cases due to the few tests that are performed and by the management that is given in the results. The Minsa never delivers the test results to private hospitals where there are covid-19 patients.

The Nicaraguan Ministry of Health (Minsa) confirmed on Wednesday the fourth death from coronavirus in the country.

According to the Minsa report, the victim was a 66-year-old man, who suffered from chronic diseases and was in a delicate state of health and was transferred to a hospital from a private center for the elderly (asylum).

"On the other hand, a 66-year-old male person, who was taken by his relatives in a delicate state, from a private center for the elderly to a hospital unit. He arrived with a history of multiple chronic diseases, including Alzheimer's , diabetes, hypertension, and unfortunately passed away yesterday afternoon, "said the general secretary of the Minsa, Carlos S?enz.

The Minsa also assured that the country continues with only three positive cases of Covid-19, despite the complaints that doctors and relatives of patients have made about an increase in cases of this disease.

After two days of not presenting the number of suspicious cases, the Minsa assured that 16 people remain in "responsible monitoring."

The Nicaraguan authorities have yet to present a plan to combat the coronavirus and until almost a month and a half after the first case arose, the Government recommended that the population wear face masks and keep their distance.

Yesterday the Mayor's Office of Managua started cleaning and disinfecting the country's markets, while the collective urban transport cooperatives also cleaned the units.

In social networks, the Nicaraguan population has started a campaign for the Minsa to provide "real" information on the impact of the disease in the country, since positive cases and deaths have been reported, allegedly by Covid-19, which are not registered by the Minsa.

The Minsa continues to insist that the country does not register local community transmission, however it has not reported how the last people who have tested positive for the coronavirus were infected.

Cases of "atypical pneumonia" and "indeterminate" laboratory tests set off alarms; Minsa continues to hide two confirmed cases already deceased
                          Ivette Mungu?a
                          April 30, 2020

Nicaragua records, in recent days, an increase in suspected cases of covid-19, the results of which are classified as "undetermined" by the Ministry of Health (Minsa). Dozens of patients have all the symptoms of the disease caused by the new coronavirus, and some have even had contact with positive cases. However, treating physicians are required to diagnose them as “atypical pneumonia,” since they do not have laboratory tests to corroborate the diagnosis, because the regimen maintains the centralization of the tests, despite the advance of the pandemic.

Almost a month and a half after the confirmation of the first positive case of covid-19 in Nicaragua, the Ministry of Health maintains a cumulative record of 14 positive cases, only with the record of three active cases "delicate, but stable", and four deaths. However, the verified information is that there are at least 15 positive cases, with six of them deceased, of which the Government hides two: the flight dispatcher, reported in the Monte Espa?a Hospital, and a 70-year-old man, who died in his home in Estel?, after being discharged, both cases occurred this Wednesday, April 29.

The Minsa also maintains 16 suspected cases in "responsible and careful monitoring", but according to the accumulated official data, it would be at least 70 people who have been hospitalized as suspects of covid-19, while the Citizen Observatory of covid-19 brings the same number to more than 342 cases.

Government additions and subtractions on covid-19 hide real impact of pandemic

"Atypical pneumonia": at least five reported cases

The cause of death of the Airport flight dispatcher, who had all the symptoms of the disease and had contact with the third covid-19 death reported by the Minsa, was classified as "atypical pneumonia": another airport worker, who was dying at the Japan-Nicaragua Friendship Hospital in Granada. In that same healthcare center, a worker from the National Aqueduct and Sewer Company (ENACAL), who is originally from Tipitapa, remained hospitalized and with the same diagnosis. After showing signs of improvement, he was discharged this Wednesday, according to medical sources.

Another case of atypical pneumonia is that of a free zone worker, who is insured at the Hospital Monte Espa?a. She also underwent the covid-19 test, but the Minsa said the result was "indeterminate." However, in this healthcare center, suspected cases "we handle as positive cases due to clinical and radiological manifestations," said a hospital source.

At the Vivian Pellas Hospital, also in Managua, a doctor who works at the Manolo Morales Hospital is hospitalized, who would have caught the virus; however, this "has evolved well" so his colleagues rule out that the Minsa recognizes the case.

In addition, the case of a pregnant woman who was admitted on April 24 to the German Nicaraguan Hospital with symptoms of covid-19 is reported. In that health center, the medical personnel describe a rather bleak picture, since they only have five mechanical fans and "they are all busy," said a source.

Another case of atypical pneumonia is that of another doctor who has been hospitalized in the Alfonso Moncada hospital, in the city of Ocotal, since last April 28. The doctor was transferred from the Hospital Pastor Jim?nez in the city of Jalapa in an emergency, with a diagnosis of atypical pneumonia, and the Minsa authorities have refused to perform the covid-19 test.

Citizen Observatory: 342 unreported suspected cases

The latest report from the Citizen Observatory, which independently monitors the behavior of the coronavirus in Nicaragua, records until April 27 a total of 342 suspected cases of covid-19 not reported by the Minsa; While the official statistics are of just 14 confirmed cases, four of them died, seven recovered and three remain hospitalized in a "delicate, but stable" state.

Epidemiologist Leonel Arg?ello, who is part of the Nicaraguan Multidisciplinary Scientific Committee, assures that complaints from the population and efforts such as the Citizen Observatory have "epidemiological value", because this provides the Ministry with a starting point to investigate possible outbreaks of the epidemic in the country.

The Citizen Observatory COVID-19 raised this Friday to 431 suspected cases of this disease in Nicaragua, when the Daniel Ortega regime only recognized 14 since the pandemic officially entered the country, in mid-March.

According to the Citizen Observatory, which independently locates cases of COVID-19 not recognized by the authorities, the number of people infected with the SARS-coV-2 coronavirus increased by 38% since last Saturday, compared to seven days previous, consequence of a report of 118 new cases.

The total of COVID-19 cases reported by the observatory includes 401 located by its own sources, 16 suspects recognized by the Ministry of Health (Minsa), and 14 confirmed.

The report includes about 30 members of the health staff in Nicaragua, including doctors and other workers, who have also been hit by symptoms associated with COVID-19, according to the Observatory.

The Citizen Observatory, which does not report confirmed cases because only the regime has access to the COVID-19 tests, highlighted that official data indicates that the pandemic has a rate of 29% in Nicaragua, which would rank it as the highest from America.

The Observatory also reported a total of 86 deaths of people who presented symptoms of COVID-19, an amount far from the four recognized by the Government of President Daniel Ortega.

Of the 86 deaths, the regime recognizes four as victims of the pandemic, 53 died from pneumonia or other COVID-19-related diseases, and another 29 from heart attacks or unknown causes, which the Observatory related to the new coronavirus.

In addition, the Observatory reported a total of 147 irregularities by the authorities and official groups related to the pandemic, such as exposure of people in crowding activities, threats, coercion, harassment, retaliation and inadequate responses from the Ministry of Health.

The Daniel Ortega regime, which has not established restrictions or social prevention measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, accepted the use of masks and social distancing in Nicaragua for the first time last Tuesday.

Ortega, whose regime promotes agglomeration activities - in fact, has organized boxing matches - has insisted that the priority is the economy, on the subject of public health, based on the fact that the country cannot stop.

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the Organization of American States (OAS) have expressed their concern about the way in which the Nicaraguan authorities handle the pandemic.

The office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) have classified the issue as a violation of the right to health.

Nicaragua reports three cases with COVID-19 in 'delicate' conditions

Managua, May 2 (EFE) .- The Nicaraguan Ministry of Health reported this Saturday that they maintain three active cases with COVID-19 and all in 'delicate' condition, and that they have not reported, until now, local community transmission.

'Today we have three people with COVID-19: one delicate and attended to; and two delicate, but stable, 'said the Secretary General of the Ministry of Health, Carlos S?enz, when reading the report on the situation of the SARS-coV-2 coronavirus before official media.

Nicaragua accumulates 14 confirmed cases, with 4 deaths, for a case fatality rate of 28.5%, the highest in America, according to official figures.

On the other hand, the official indicated that 3 of the 15 people who were given "responsible and careful follow-up" went into home security after having "completed the regulatory period."

"Therefore, there are 12 people left, to which 3 more are added today, for a total of 15 people in care and responsible and permanent monitoring," he said.

                              GOVERNMENT GIVES ECONOMY PRIORITY

The government chaired by the Sandinista Daniel Ortega has not specified the number of tests it has carried out and has limited itself to reporting on the number of confirmed cases, deaths and that in all cases they have been imported, that is, no cases have been recorded community local transmission.

The Executive has been criticized by various sectors for promoting massive events and crowds against the current recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Last Thursday, Ortega declared himself against the 'Stay at home' campaign because, in his opinion, it would destroy the Nicaraguan economy that has contracted in the last two years and that is largely informal.

The Sandinista leader also described the confinement and suspension of international flights as "extreme measures" and "radical".

Ortega said that his Government will maintain "normal activities", while keeping the recommendations of the Health authorities, such as social distancing and handwashing, "without falling into extreme, radical measures that would kill the country."

                              DISINFECTION DAY

The authorities began a week this week to disinfect popular markets, parks, bus terminals, public urban transport and taxis, among others.

The Government decided to take preventive measures after 41 days after the first coronavirus case was confirmed and after unofficial reports of people suffering or dying from the disease increased.

Ortega's decision came after insistent calls from the Multidisciplinary Scientific Committee and the Nicaraguan Medical Association, which bring together the most prestigious doctors in the country.

Ortega's handling of the pandemic has caused concern in entities such as the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the Organization of American States (OAS), as well as the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (Acnudh) sees it as human rights violations.EFE
