Three new cases of coronavirus detected in Haiti: 47 in total
Loop News Created: April 19, 2020

Haiti announces this Sunday three new cases of coronavirus. The country now has 47 cases of Covid-19 contamination.

The number of people affected by Covid-19 continues to grow in Haiti. With 44 patients until recently, the country has just announced this Sunday, April 19, the confirmation of three new cases of contamination. This brings the assessment to 47 confirmed cases out of the 595 suspected cases identified throughout the country.

Three people have already lost their lives in Haiti as a result of the coronavirus. Several patients have publicly stated that they feel significantly better a few days after being tested positive, but no cure has been officially recorded so far.

Among the 47 people infected, 11 had "never" made a trip abroad, said Secretary of State for Communication, Eddy Jackson Alexis. They therefore caught the virus through community transmission, according to the authorities.

Haiti so far only has 57 confirmed cases of COVID-19. Haiti’s prime minister, Joseph Jouthe, said another flight carrying more than 100 Haitian deportees was expected this week.

“These are Haitians, they are coming home, we must accept them,” he told a local radio station. Jouthe did not mention the infections on the earlier flight.

U.S. Representative Andy Levin, a Democrat, said on Twitter that the new flight to Haiti should be stopped to prevent a wider spread of the disease.

“These deportations are immoral, and they put both Americans and Haitians at risk,” he wrote

The new virus has spread slowly in Haiti, which has confirmed 72 cases and 5 deaths so far. But the U.S. deportations and return of thousands of Haitian workers from the Dominican Republic, which is one of the worst affected countries in the region, could soon change that.

Two new cases of Covid-19 contamination were confirmed on Saturday by the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP). Health authorities have also registered a new person cured of the coronavirus.

Now, 74 confirmed cases, seven people healed and six deaths, this is the assessment of the evolution of the disease in Haiti, presented by the health authorities via opinion number 28.

Always, the MSPP invites the population to practice barrier gestures and to limit their movements as much as possible. A scenario study carried out by two universities in the United States and reported by the scientific unit set up by President Jovenel Mo?se indicates that in the worst case Haiti could have 20,000 deaths between May and the beginning of June and 86% of the population would be infected if nothing is done.

Junot Felix, a health systems specialist, told Alter Radio on Tuesday that positive cases may go up in places that traditionally host many people, and also forecast a Covid-19 peak on May.

However, he estimated that in tropical nations including Haiti, the level of contagion will not be the same as in other areas of the world. Sunlight and heat are main factors that must be taken into account in the spread of the new coronavirus, Junot Felix, professor at the Haitian State University, stated.

According to the doctor, many studies in Haiti are unreliable, since foreign scientific teams do not have a vast knowledge of national sociology.

'Most of the time, these studies are just statistical predictions to establish a new model. No one knows how many people are cureently living in Haiti to make such a deduction. Last census in Haiti, 2003, was plagued with methodological problems,' he said.

Last week, health authorities forecast that in the worst case scenario, 86% of nearly 12 million citizens will be infected with Covid-19, and as many as 20,000 will die.

Till Monday, Haiti recorded 76 positive cases, six deaths and eight recovered, the majority in the capital of the country.

Distribution of deaths by age group:

                              0-19 years: 2
                              20-44 years: 2

                              64 and over: 1

The MSPP recommends to the population to be more careful because this new coronavirus is a reality, it is together that we will succeed in dealing with it.

                              - Stay home
                              - Always wash your hands
                              - Avoid putting your hands in your mouth, nose and eyes
                              - Always keep a distance of 3 steps away from other people if you have to travel for an emergency.
