In parts of Latin America, water shortages undermine battle with coronavirus

          Robenson Sanon, Sarah Marsh
          5 MIN READ
PORT-AU-PRINCE/HAVANA (Reuters) - Every day, Fontus Pierre Raymond wakes up at the crack of dawn to get in line to fill buckets of water at the communal tap in his densely-packed Port-au-Prince shantytown so that his mother and seven younger siblings can wash before work and school.
Less than a quarter of households have basic handwashing facilities with water and soap, according to data compiled by the United Nations.

“Since they announced the pandemic (in Haiti two weeks ago), the tap has had water twice,” said Mimose Pierre Raymond, 44, Fontus’ mother. “But we can spend weeks without water.”

Haiti has only confirmed 18 cases to date, but experts fear the COVID-19 respiratory disease caused by the virus would be more deadly there than other countries if it took hold given the widespread malnutrition and its overburdened healthcare system.

Haiti on Sunday reported its first novel coronavirus death, a 55-year-old man who had underlying health conditions.

The health ministry said the man suffered from diabetes and hypertension.

He was one of only 21 confirmed cases of the COVID-19 virus in Haiti, a demographically young country where over half those diagnosed with the disease have been under age 45.

Only 218 tests for the new coronavirus have been carried out in Ha?ti since the first two cases were confirmed March 19, however, leading to criticism from the national medical community of the government's handling of the pandemic...

The number of people infected with coronavirus in the country has risen to 31. A new case has just been confirmed by Mrs. Marie Greta Roy Cl?ment, Minister of Public Health and Population, in a note dated April 9, 2020.

No one has yet been cured of the coronavirus since its appearance on March 19 in the country, which counts almost every day a new case. More than 300 suspected cases are recorded while 766 people are placed in residential or institutional quarantine.
Community transmissions started two days ago. For health authorities, the situation is becoming more and more worrying. They continue to ask the population to comply with the instructions in order to curb the spread of covid-19 in the country.
