    Panama detects first case of bird flu and establishes health alert
    Avian influenza is a disease that has no cure or treatment, it causes high mortality in wild and domestic birds such as ducks, chickens, chickens, turkeys, among others.

    Panama's agricultural authorities reported this Saturday the first case of H5N1 avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, and declared a 90-day health alert.

    "In order to prevent H5NI Avian Influenza from spreading in poultry and commercial farms, a health alert has been declared for a period of 90 calendar days," said a statement from the National Directorate of Animal Health (Dinasa) of the Ministry of Agricultural Development (Mida) of Panama.

    This first case was found in "a wild bird", according to the letter, which did not give further details...

    Panama detects the second case of bird flu
    The Minister of Agricultural Development explained that the second case was detected in a wild bird near the port of Vacamonte, in West Panama.

    The Minister of Agricultural Development of Panama (MIDA), Augusto Valderrama, confirmed this Monday that the second case of Avian Influenza H5N1 or bird flu has been detected in the country .

      Following the case occurred in El Platanal, Colón (brown pelican), epidemiological investigation teams were sent to track and verify the impact on wild and domestic birds in the area and surrounding communities: Ciri, Aguacate, Río Diego, El Limón, Boca de Toabré, Sabanita Verde, San Lucas, La Huaca and Cuatro Calles. As of February 12th, 326 families were visited, with a total population of 1,920 backyard poultry (subsistence breeding). No affected birds have been reported in these communities; however, investigations are ongoing. On February 3th, birds were reported affected in the communities of Santa María Belén, Province of Colón and Concepción in the Province of Veragua. Field visits were made and samples were taken, obtaining a positive result for HPAI H5N1 on February 10th. In the community of Santa María Belén, Province of Colón, depopulation teams were sent to cull 322 backyard poultry on site and in the neighboring community of Rio Veraguas, a total of 1,078 birds were culled. In the community of Concepción in the Province of Veragua, depopulation teams culled 381 birds. In the community of Guázaro, 436 birds were culled. Epidemiological surveillance is being maintained in the community.
