The authorities of the Ministry of Health revealed this Monday, February 20, what is the situation that Guatemala is going through regarding the H5N1 avian flu and spoke about the national poultry production and the consumption of its derivatives, such as eggs and meat.

Guatemala is on health alert after a few days ago cases of bird flu were detected in 11 wild pelicans that were found dead on the Atlantic coast.

Lorena Gobern, head of the Department of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Health, told "La Red", the alert remains, but that one should not speculate about the development of the disease, mainly with regard to the consumption of poultry products produced in the country.

In addition, the Government detailed the ways in which the virus can manifest itself at the time of infecting a person, something that has not happened in Guatemala so far, the official emphasized.

"It can be from a presentation of mild symptoms, such as a mild or strong flu, or it can trigger pneumonia and even death, depending on the person's immunological condition, these may be the presentations of this avian influenza virus," he said. ruled.

In addition, he explained that currently in Guatemala there are only seasonal influenza vaccines available, although he reiterated that the stocks are intended for people at risk, although he said that Health is evaluating the purchase of more medicines.

“There is availability of seasonal influenza (vaccine) in the health areas of the country. This vaccine is located for risk groups, pregnant women or people with chronic diseases. It is possible that derived from this situation the country will have to evaluate the acquisition of more vaccines”, said the official when questioning whether the seasonal influenza vaccine is effective against bird flu.

He also reiterated that at the moment there is no presence of the virus in poultry production farms in Guatemala.
