The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food of Guatemala (Maga), Édgar de León Moreno, confirmed this Tuesday, February 14, that wild birds, such as Pelicans, infected with the H5N1 avian flu were detected in a community in Puerto Barrios, Izabal, for what A government alert was declared.
De León said that the Maga has reinforced sanitary measures in the national territory due to the confirmation of cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza of its H5N1 type detected in wild birds of the pelican type in the vicinity of the Motagüilla farmhouse, in the El Quetzalito village, Puerto Neighborhoods.
He explained that the cases were diagnosed by the National Laboratory and confirmed by the National Laboratory of Veterinary Services of the United States Department of Agriculture.
He clarified that "there is no case of avian influenza of the H5N1 type in technical farms or backyard productions, also known as family production", and that in this sense they are sure that poultry reproduction is protected and the population is guaranteed the supply and consumption of poultry meat and its derivatives.
