            Friday April 10, 2020
Covid-19 cases continue to rise in Guatemala with 137 positives
Guatemala, Apr 10 (Prensa Latina) Contagions due to the SARS-Cov2 coronavirus, which causes the Covid-19 disease, reached 137 in Guatemala today, a figure that includes three deceased, 19 recovered and 115 active.

According to the Secretary of Social Communication of the Presidency, Carlos Sandoval, this Friday 11 new positive cases were confirmed, six women and five men between 23 and 50 years old.

The day before, the highest number of infected people was recorded, 39, and projections indicate that in the coming weeks, statistics will skyrocket despite the strict containment measures that the Government ordered since last March 16, when the borders were closed to foreigners. , suspended classes at all levels and work in the public and private sectors.

Since March 21, voluntary isolation was reinforced with a 12-hour curfew that expires next Sunday, when new provisions are expected as President Alejandro Giammattei announced yesterday.

In his latest messages to the nation, the president asked citizens to comply to the letter with the restrictions, however harsh they may be in order to contain an eventual epidemic outbreak at the national level that collapses the weak public health system.

Press media published fragments of a letter sent to Giammattei by members of the medical union, who propose to toughen up the isolation for at least two more weeks, as well as provide health personnel with the necessary means of protection to face the Covid emergency. 19.

In the face of evidence of social indiscipline, the professionals recommended maintaining the curfew and preventing companies that are not providers of basic needs from continuing to operate in order to mitigate contagion as much as possible and to flatten the infection curve.

Otherwise, they said, existing medical facilities will be insufficient to care for patients who require it.

They also recalled that the use of masks, mandatory starting next Monday, will be insufficient if it is not accompanied by physical distance measures, hand washing and surface cleaning.

After the first community case in the municipality of Patz?n, Chimaltenango, the Government also ordered a ban on going outside the residence departments in an attempt to prevent the spread of the disease nationwide.

A single deportation flight to Guatemala by the U.S. government saw more than 75% of the migrants later test positive for novel coronavirus, the country's health minister told reporters on Tuesday.

Guatemala, along with El Salvador, Honduras and Mexico, has urged the U.S. to halt removals and deportations or take other steps to stop the virus' spread from the U.S., now the epicenter of the pandemic.

But last Friday, President Donald ***** instead signed a memorandum to authorize sanctions against any country that doesn't accept removals from the U.S. -- a threat to all four countries, despite concerns about the ability of their fragile health systems to handle severe outbreaks.
                        ....
But Health Minister Hugo Monroy suggested Tuesday that a recent spike in cases was because of deportations from the U.S. On one flight, more than 75% of migrants later tested positive, he said, adding he couldn't specify because of security reasons.

He also suggested that between 50% and 75% of all migrants deported from the U.S. recently have tested positive, without specifying what time frame he was talking about or providing a total number, but he later walked that back, saying he was referring to one flight.
