July 18, 2020 Guatemala reports 38042 cases and 1449 deaths Guatemala has a new portal, announced on July 18,https://www.mspas.gob.gt/ developed in conjunction with the Pan American Health Organization.
These numbers for cases and deaths are for July 17, a final update at 11:59 p.m.

Definitions have changed and there are some large differences in the numbers, recovered cases for example, due to the new definitions. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to access the website. https://twitter.com/MinSaludGuate/status/1284948855784648706/photo/1

This is a press release that answers the question: why are there changes in the numbers of confirmed cases and the numbers of recoveries.
Why are there over 3,000 more confirmed cases?
In a press conference, the head of the Department of Epidemiology of MSPAS, Lorena Gobern, indicated that, as a result of the analysis, it was established that in the database that is being used as the primary source for the identification of confirmed cases, there were two boxes that gave results for one person: one that was called result and another that was called final result.
The analysis of the information that was previously being given was only on the final result box and the result box was not taken into account, explained Dr. Govern.
"There were many final result boxes in this database that were empty, and in that same patient the result box was filled in with the result of the test he had taken.
An update of confirmed cases was made which gave an increase in cases from 33,809 to 38,677.
Why is there an increase in recoveries?
There was no previous accurate data that could give us what were the real recovered people we had in the country, said Lorena Governor: "We had very few and there are many people who have already returned to their activities, who have been given as recovered but who were not in the statistics".
There is a definition for this board," he explained, "in which an analysis of the deaths was made and it was established that 90% of the cases that unfortunately die in the country, die after 21 days at the most.
It was estimated that all the cases that are alive and have more than 21 days since the onset of symptoms are cases that are considered recovered in the country, stressed the head of the Department of Epidemiology.
"We have been working to obtain this information and we are now doing all the referrals, analysis and discounting of deaths. Each death that has been registered as confirmed has an identification in the laboratory and is identified as a case, so this allows us to make this discount between the living and the dead in order to obtain the cases recovered that are more than 21 days old.
However, when someone dies after 21 days and their death is reported, it is discounted from the data of those recovered.
For that reason, from 4,989 the data changed to 22,923 recovered.
