Fourth positive case of COVID-19 detected in Cuba
The three cases of Italian tourists confirmed with COVID-19 continue to evolve satisfactorily under strict medical surveillance ...
    03/13/2020

The Minister of Public Health has pointed out that epidemiological surveillance has been organized in Cuba through active research on travelers and patients with respiratory symptoms.

Yesterday, a new positive case for the New SARS-CoV-2 Coronavirus was confirmed at the National Reference Center of the Pedro Kour? Institute of Tropical Medicine (IPK).

This is a Cuban resident in Santa Clara, Villa Clara province, husband of a Bolivian citizen based in Milan, Lombardy Region, Italy, who entered the country on February 24, apparently asymptomatic, and began to develop respiratory symptoms mild on the 27th of the same month.

On March 8, the husband began with respiratory symptoms, both going to the health system, where they were immediately admitted to the Villa Clara isolation hospital and were later transferred and admitted to the IPK yesterday.

In the tests carried out, the Cuban citizen was positive for the new coronavirus, while his wife was negative, given the time of 15 days of evolution of the disease from the first symptoms.

Epidemiological control actions are carried out on people identified as contacts, who remain asymptomatic and under surveillance.

The evolution of both patients is favorable and so far neither is life-threatening.

In relation to the three cases of Italian tourists confirmed and reported yesterday, and which were identified in Trinidad, they continue to evolve satisfactorily under strict medical supervision.

We acknowledge the immediate action of the carrier and the guide, both belonging to the Ministry of Tourism, as well as to the owners of the hostel where they stayed, who encouraged rapid assistance to health services.

We reiterate to our people the need to promptly inform the health authorities in the presence of people with respiratory symptoms.

Fifth case confirmed with Covid-19 in Cuba
About the other four patients, three are stable and one, a 61-year-old Italian, is in a stable critical condition
      Agencia Prensa Latina
      March 16, 2020 - 8:02 pm

The Cuban government confirmed the fifth case with Covid-19 on Monday as part of a follow-up meeting on prevention and control measures against the disease, led by President Miguel D?az-Canel.

Public Health Minister Jos? Angel Portal said the 63-year-old man shows mild symptoms and is stable.

Resident in the capital municipality of Diez de Octubre, the new person infected with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus returned from Spain on the 8th, had mild symptoms on the 11th and went to the doctor the next day, the 12th, when he was admitted.

Portal added that the contacts in the new case are asymptomatic.

About the other four patients, three are stable and one, a 61-year-old Italian, is in a stable critical condition, after suffering a worsening of his health this Sunday.

The five affected are admitted to the Pedro Kour? Tropical Medicine Institute.

The direct contacts and passengers of the flight where the Italian tourists arrived are still on active surveillance and without incident, he added during the meeting.

Likewise, the Cuban head pointed out that from January 25 to date 470 admissions are accumulated and 21 thousand 968 patients are under primary care surveillance.

At the close of the meeting this afternoon, 373 patients were admitted for epidemiological surveillance, of whom 145 are foreigners and 228 are Cubans.

Of the 145 patients studied for Covid-19, five had positive results, he said.

On the other hand, he stressed that in 33 of the more than 139 countries where the transmission of the new coronavirus was confirmed, there is a presence of the Cuban medical collaboration.

Almost all of the aid workers were duly trained in their respective brigades to deal with the situation.

He commented that health professionals with experience in disaster situations and serious epidemics, including those who participated in the fight against Ebola, continue to prepare in Cuba.

Before the public's concerns about controls at the country's borders, the minister said that advanced technology scanners were placed to measure the body temperature of passengers.

As a work practice, the protocol of acting before each suspect is being followed as if it were a confirmed case until proven otherwise, explained Deputy Prime Minister Roberto Morales.

Meanwhile, President D?az-Canel called for precise work in surveillance at ports and airports.

He also reiterated the importance of the actions carried out by family doctors and nurses in the active investigation of the population and the follow-up that is carried out in the communities, especially older people living alone, for whose protection emerging measures were approved

Two new cases of Covid-19 confirmed in Cuba.
      March 17, 2020 AvatarCubadebate

Two new cases of Covid-19 in Cuba are confirmed: The National Director of Epidemiology of the Minsap, Francisco Alberto Dur?n Garc?a, reported at the Round Table on the presence of two new cases of COVID-19 in the country.

In total there are seven diagnosed with the disease. In almost all infections, the characteristic that they have been through contact with an infected foreign person is maintained.

Cuba confirmed today two new positive cases to COVID-19, for which there are seven infected in the country, but it cannot be said that there is transmission on the Island or that it is urgent to establish quarantine, Francisco Dur?n, national director of Epidemiology reported today. at the Ministry of Public Health.

From the Round Table television program, Dur?n did not give details of those new cases that were known at the last moment and said that more information will be offered in the Stellar Television Newscast, at 8 pm.

He emphasized that it cannot be said that there is transmission in Cuba, because that will happen when people with the presence of the virus, with or without symptoms, who have not been related to any of the infected patients who have come from abroad or with links to they.

He indicated that, according to the protocols of the World Health Organization, quarantine should be established only when such person-to-person transmissibility is verified in the Greater Antilles.

The quarantine creates a situation of tension and produces stress, it is known that the latter reduces the immune capacity of people, and therefore there is more risk of the disease, he explained.

However, he illustrated that for the moment a group of public activities have been canceled, especially cultural ones, involving the confluence of a large number of people.

"We have prepared for extreme cases," he said, adding that the measures will be applied depending on the complexity of transmission in the country.

He recalled that since January Cuba prepared a Prevention and Control Plan against coronavirus, and a group of actions have been carried out at the national and local levels with the participation of the main authorities of the country, as a result of which some 500 people have been isolated and 25 thousand have remained under surveillance.

The plan has been expanding and it is important at this point to increase extreme vigilance because it is a disease that requires intersectorality for its confrontation, he said.

He also commented that COVID-19 had a very rapid expansion from the first cases in Wuhan, China, and that it has currently wreaked havoc in 144 countries, with more than 180,000 cases and some 7,000 deaths.

“We cannot talk about transmission, because that will happen when we start to find people with the presence of the virus, with or without symptoms, who have not had a relationship with any of the infected patients who came from abroad or their links with them. We are preparing for that situation, ”he said...

          March 20, 2020

The Cuban government announced that the number of positive coronavirus cases on the Island amounted to 21, while the suspected cases already number 716, just nine days after the first Covid-19 patients were reported in Cuba.

Cuban President Miguel D?az-Canel announced at the Round Table on Cuban television that the Island will close the borders to international tourism.

Cuba will not allow tourists to enter as of Tuesday, and decided to leave around 60,000 foreign visitors who remain on the island, Prime Minister Manuel Marrero said on television.

The closure does not apply to Cubans who return to the Island, nor to foreigners residing in Cuba, who must remain in quarantine for 14 days after arrival in the territory, Marrero explained.

Given the threat posed by the pandemic, the Cuban government decided to implement isolation measures for people with suspicious symptoms.

Likewise, it will impose restriction of movements on the crews that arrive in Cuba and have to stay for a while on the Island.

Cuba is no longer libre (free) for foreign travellers. After decades in which tourists have been able to wander without restrictions, the communist government of the Caribbean’s largest island has imposed draconian new rules in a bid to control the spread of coronavirus.

As the health ministry in Havana announced 36 new cases of Covid-19 across the country, all flights in and out of Cuba have been banned – with the exception of repatriation flights agreed at a governmental level.

All foreign vessels have been ordered to leave Cuban waters.

Anyone who arrived between 17 and 23 March will be retrospectively tested for coronavirus. This could include some British travellers: the Foreign Office warning against non-essential travel abroad was issued on 17 March after flights had departed.

Overseas tourists are being funnelled into a few “foreigner hotspots”.
Tourists are confined to their hotels. Anyone who is staying in a casa particular – a private house with rooms rented to tourists – must stay inside the dwelling until transport arrives to move them to a government hotel.

While that journey will be free, the tourist will pay the bill for the hotel.

The Foreign Office says: “Tourists who did not leave on the scheduled commercial flights (last one on 1 April 2020) will have to stay in a designated hotel until the government of Cuba reviews the measures.”

But the UK embassy in Havana has told British travellers that they can sign up for a repatriation flight to Rome. Blue Panorama is operating from the Cuban capital to Rome Fiumicino on 5 April 2020.

Cuba has long boasted the best health service in the Caribbean – and arguably the whole of Latin America.

Early on in the Covid-19 crisis, a group of Cuban doctors flew to Italy to help with the medical effort in the worst-affected European country. Health care teams from Cuba are also working in other countries.

Any tourists who fall ill while in Cuba will not be allowed to leave the country until they have settled their medical bills.
