First case suspected by COVID-19 in Costa Rica

March 5, 2020 . The Ministry of Health studies the first suspected case by Covid-19. This is a 52-year-old Costa Rican woman, a neighbor of the Canton of Pococ?, who was in Italy and Tunisia and who arrived in the country on February 29 with no symptoms that match the case definition, starting later with the symptomatology.

The case is classified as suspicious after the respiratory panel (FilmArray) was negative today, ruling out that the symptoms are due to another type of respiratory virus.

The Health authorities activated all the isolation and care protocols for the patient, who remains isolated in her house. At the same time, the respective samples were taken in order to send them to the Costa Rican Institute for Research and Teaching in Nutrition and Health (Incense) to carry out the test that discards or confirms the case.

Costa Rica confirms first case of coronavirus
      By Free Press March 6, 2020 - 15:37 HS

Costa Rica confirmed on March 6 the first case of covid-19 in his country, the first also in Central America.
Costa Rican health authorities report in a press conference the first confirmed case of covid-19.

The infected patient is a 49-year-old woman, an American tourist, who is isolated in the capital San Jos?.

In addition, there is another patient, the woman's husband, whose case is "highly suspicious," health minister Daniel Salas told a news conference.

According to official information, it was the husband who had direct contact with a positive covid-14 patient in New York before arriving in Costa Rica. Both patients are stable.

The couple arrived in Costa Rica on March 1, recently visited Puntarenas and Alajuela, and had contact with at least five people, which are sought by the authorities to evaluate them.

President Carlos Alvarado called for calm and to attend to the information and recommendations of the health authorities.

Meanwhile, in Guatemala, there are no confirmed cases of the new coronavirus, although the Executive activated the state of Calamity to facilitate prevention actions.

An Italian tourist requested medical attention in Quich? for believing he might have the virus - he had been working on a cruise ship - but his case was ruled out ...

Costa Rica up to 5 confirmed cases of COVID-19, plus 7 suspects

COVID-19 in Costa Rica: 5 confirmed cases, 7 suspects, 2 discarded

The Ministry of Health of Costa Rica raised the confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the country to five, a disease caused by the new coronavirus; while handling seven suspicious cases.

Laboratory tests conducted at the Costa Rican Institute for Research and Education in Nutrition and Health (Incense) yielded four new confirmed cases, which add to the first reported case in the country, which was a 49-year-old American woman.

According to the Ministry of Health, the new cases correspond to the 49-year-old man, husband of the American, who became the first confirmed case in Costa Rica. He still has no symptoms of the disease.

Then there is a 54-year-old man, Costa Rican, who remains hospitalized in a delicate condition in a hospital because in addition to the disease COVID-19 suffers from diabetes and developed pneumonia; this man's aunt, a 73-year-old woman; and the caretaker of that patient's aunt, a 41-year-old Costa Rican.

Foreigners remain isolated and under medical supervision in Josefino hotel. Costa Ricans are isolated in public hospitals. All stable health, except the 54-year-old Costa Rican who remains delicate.

Additionally, the Ministry of Health reported seven suspicious cases between nationals and foreigners: one more contact of the 54-year-old Costa Rican, plus six people who have no connection with each other, nor with those confirmed; but they meet the definition of a suspect case and also the respiratory panel, which excludes other diseases, was negative. All are kept isolated in hotel or residential centers.

Due to the increase in the number of suspicious cases that arises day by day, the Ministry of Health will, for the moment, handle the report of suspicious cases and confirmed daily, going into detail only in confirmed cases.

VIDEO: COVID-19 cases amount to 22
CCSS authorities enable new disability model
The positive cases of coronavirus COVID-19 in Costa Rica now amount to 22 confirmed positive sick people, as recently reported by the Ministry of Health at a press conference.

A total of 118 opportunities were ruled out of the number of people under suspicion.

The cases respond in a distributed way to 18 adults, 2 older adults and 2 minors.

On the other hand, authorities of the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) met in an extraordinary way this morning where they coordinated to authorize a new disability model, which will involve those people suspected of having the disease.

Given the declaration of a pandemic issued by the World Health Organization (WHO) in the early hours of this Wednesday, the Costa Rican health authorities confirmed that this only means increasing preventive measures to avoid massive contagion among the healthy population.

Daniel Salas, Minister of Health, considers it likely that the increase in positive cases will continue in the coming days, but this is not where attention should be focused, but rather on preventive actions to avoid a larger spread.

There are already five cases of coronavirus in the country

The three new cases of coronavirus registered in the country are imported, with a total of five, reported yesterday the Health Minister, Rafael S?nchez C?rdenas.

He explained that these are five travelers who entered the Dominican Republic through the International Airports of Las Americas and Punta Cana, between February 22 and March 3 of the current year.

Of the three new cases of Covid-19, the first is a 12-year-old boy of Dominican nationality, who was in France and Spain, but entered the country without symptoms through the Las Americas International Airport; However, on March 5 he presented symptoms, so he was taken to a private medical center in Santiago.

"We want to ratify to all citizens that these three new cases are also imported. There is still no proven evidence that the virus is circulating within the Dominican population. There is no community circulation of the virus, ”said Health Minister S?nchez C?rdenas.

He recommended that all citizens wait calmly, without exaltation or panic, to verify the community circulation of the virus that has not occurred to date.

The minister expressed that schools and colleges should continue with their activities in a normal way and only children who present respiratory symptoms or who have a recent history of travel to countries with circulation, should be withdrawn and notify the authorities.

Costa Rica has confirmed 26 cases of the novel coronavirus, the Health Ministry announced Friday afternoon.

The figure marks a three-person increase over Thursday’s report. It also corresponds to the first confirmed case in the province of Cartago.

“We haven’t had a major increase in cases,” said Health Minister Daniel Salas. “This doesn’t mean that the situation is stabilizing. There will continue to be more cases, but the actions we all take can help prevent a significant jump in cases.”

Three people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19, and one — a 54-year-old Costa Rican man — remains in serious condition. Two-hundred eighty-nine people have tested negative, the Health Ministry said.

Next week, Costa Rica will expand coronavirus testing to be available at Hospital M?xico, San Juan de Dios Hospital, National Children’s Hospital and “probably at the private level, too,” according to Dr. Roberto Arroba, Coordinator of Influenza for the Health Ministry.
