Costa Rica has 655 cases of COVID-19 and creates protection for wildlife
    EFE - San Jos?

Costa Rica has 655 cases of COVID-19 and creates protection for wildlife

Costa Rica registers until Saturday a total of 655 positive cases of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus (causing the disease of COVID-19), six more cases in 24 hours, and establishes measures for the protection of wildlife.

The Costa Rican Minister of Health, Daniel Salas, indicated in a virtual press conference that there are 16 hospitalized patients, of which 10 are located in intensive care units, while a total of 97 have recovered in the country and 7,095 have been discarded. .

"Most of us have shown an attitude that has allowed us to reach these figures, also the result of the most restrictive actions at Easter, but it is not a guarantee that we do not have an increase in sudden cases. We must get used to living with the measures and social distancing, "said Salas.

Since the first case was diagnosed on March 6, Costa Rica has recorded four deaths: the first occurred on March 18 and 20, both 87-year-old men; the third was a 45-year-old man who died on April 8; and the fourth was an 84-year-old patient who died on April 15.

The executive president of the Costa Rican Social Security Fund, Rom?n Macaya, revealed that the entity started the placement of a mobile unit (field hospital) in the north to attend cases of the new coronavirus.

"It is a cross-border area and we know that this population may fluctuate depending on the migratory transit. The mobile unit was implemented to provide differentiated care for these types of patients and to increase the availability of care," said Macaya.

    MEASURES FOR WILDLIFE

The Costa Rican government also reported temporary measures in protected areas to regulate the interaction of researchers and park rangers with animals, with the aim of protecting wildlife during the national health emergency by COVID-19.

The Minister of Environment and Energy, Carlos Manuel Rodr?guez, affirmed that with these actions Costa Rica becomes one of the first countries in the world to take measures to protect wildlife and national biodiversity in the midst of the global emergency.

"We are acting responsibly and anticipating what could be a tragedy for humanity, under the precautionary principle, protected by the Biodiversity Law," said Rodr?guez.

The authorities explained that the researchers, assistants and personnel of Conservation Areas will not be able to visit sites where wildlife is present, either in their natural habitat (in free living conditions), or in wildlife management sites (in conditions of captivity).

The director of the National Commission for the Management of Biodiversity, Angela Gonz?lez, stressed that "cases such as the tigress in the United States that got COVID-19, are a wake-up call, and imply that we must be vigilant as a country to avoid a tragedy such as reverse zoonosis where contagion from humans to wildlife occurs. "

The measures were extended until June 1, 2020, but the term may be extended as the national health emergency progresses.
