The Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) announces that, following a phone call between Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Dean Barrow and Premier Hon. Alden McLaughlin of the Cayman Islands on Saturday, April 11, Belize can obtain from Cayman as many COVID-19 test kits as needed.

Belize has so far received 2,500 tests from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and is expecting an additional 11,500 tests from the organization. Additionally, Belize ordered 4,000 tests from the Roche Agency in Guatemala, 2,000 of which are to be delivered this week and the remaining next week.

The Ministry of Health has also confirmed that a test kit is different from an actual test, and in fact, contains 100 tests.

The OPM is, therefore, determining in consultation with the Ministry of Health, how many Cayman test kits to procure, and will place its order as soon as the 11,500 tests from PAHO are in hand. Furthermore, the OPM confirms that the Cayman kits are compatible with Belize’s PCR test processing machines.

On behalf of the Government and people of Belize, the OPM thanks Premier McLaughlin and the Government and people of the Cayman Islands.

As Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon sat on a private island off the coast of Belize for her next travel story, she found it odd that more and more passengers wore masks at the airport. When trips were suddenly cancelled, the Jet Set Sarah blog owner accepted a new reality for travel had been created by coronavirus.

“It was a shock, the old normal is completely gone and will never return,” she said, doubtful about being “back on a plane before October”.

A global shutdown can hurt not just governments, hotels and tour vendors, but the writers and entrepreneurs whose blogs, businesses, and livelihoods are supported by trips to far-away destinations.

“When the reality and permanence hits everyone, it’s almost a second sense of grief,” Greaves-Gabbadon said

Belize Zoo has something of a reputation for being a haven for animals. Most of the species living there have been rescued from poachers or poor conditions. All are native to the Central American country bounded on one side by the Caribbean and on the other by lush rainforest.

Usually, visitors to the zoo can get a close look at jaguars, toucans, tapirs and other endemic species. But now that the country is in coronavirus lockdown and can't welcome any customers, founder Sharon Matola, says the institution is struggling financially. And that makes it hard to keep their hundreds of animals sufficiently fed.

But locals are stepping in and donating everything from sugarcane to pigs' heads to supplement the zoo dwellers' diets.

The Caribbean countries of Barbados, Belize and the Bahamas are among the most exposed in the world to the sudden pause in global tourism. “This pandemic shock is unlike any shock that these sovereigns have seen in their history,” said Julia Smith, an analyst at S&P Global Ratings. S&P expects that tourism in the Caribbean will probably decline by 60-70% from April to December compared with last year. In fact, due to COVID-19, the ratings agency downgraded the Bahamas and Belize this month further to junk status, while lowering the credit outlooks in Aruba, Barbados, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica to negative.

To put the magnitude of the problem into perspective, these countries are accustomed to welcoming three to six cruise ships a day. That is 12,000-20,000 new tourists hitting their shores every day.
                              ...

These economies need to be diversified, but this can’t be done overnight – meanwhile, every night, I fear these countries are on the cusp of civil unrest. Tourism-dependent economies are collapsing.
