El Salvador’s Health Minister, Francisco Alab?, warned this Sunday that the country is on the verge of repeating the “most critical” moments of the coronavirus pandemic, which could cause a “second wave” of infections in early 2021 .

“We are at the gates of what happened at the most critical moments of the pandemic in our country,” said the official, referring to the months of July and August last, when the highest records of daily infections occurred.

He added that “this is the moment when we must be more prudent” and “redouble our efforts and comply with the measures” of biosecurity.

Alab? warned that if the increase in daily cases registered by the country for a few weeks and this Saturday exceeded 280 official infections, “probably at the beginning of next year we will be facing a second wave of covid-19.”

The Salvadoran president, Nayib Bukele, announced this Sunday from his social networks that he has prohibited the entry of people from South Africa and the United Kingdom in the face of the new mutation of the coronavirus detected in that last country and that makes it more contagious.

The president recommended to Salvadorans who are in Europe “to accelerate their travel itineraries as much as possible, before new restrictions have to be imposed by the new strain of coronavirus.”

The appearance of a new variant of the virus has forced the British authorities to establish harsh restrictive measures in part of the country due to the alarming increase in infections.

Faced with scientific evidence that indicates that the new strain accelerates transmission by up to 70%, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been forced to modify the population movement plans for this Christmas.

El Salvador registers a total of 43,477 infected people, of which 1,250 have died and 39,142 have recovered, while 3,085 cases remain “active.”
