    A backlog has prompted the Saskatoon Health Region to ask people to refrain from using emergency rooms except in cases of true urgency.

    Integrated Health Services vice-president Corey Miller said a flu outbreak earlier this month has contributed to a backlog that affects the entire system.

    With the city?s three hospitals full, an increase in the number of those visiting emergency rooms has stretched waiting times for an in-patient bed to as long as 48 hours.

    Miller said the advisory will remain in effect for about three to five days.

    ?It isn?t necessarily an emergency issue, but emergency tends to be where that backlog is created,? Miller said. ?This time of year we also have staffing challenges because we have lots of staff who take vacation.?

    Miller said the flu outbreak also affects staff availability...
