    Week 1 (January 2 ? January 8, 2011)


    Summary of Nova Scotia surveillance findings, for the period ending January 8, 2011:

    Sporadic activity continues for the second week in Capital district Health Authority, while the rest of the province is reporting no activity.
    One lab confirmed case of Influenza A was detected this week, and the specimen has not been subtyped.

    Good thing - Halifax will host the Canada Winter Games soon, with partcipantes from across the country:

    "The Halifax 2011 Canada Games will take
    place from February 11 to 27. The 18 days of
    events associated with the Games will feature
    3,600 participants in 20 sports as well as
    many arts and cultural activities. More than
    5,000 volunteers will be engaged to deliver
    an exceptional experience for the participants,
    spectators, sponsors, media, and
    funding parties."

      Week 2 (January 9 – January 15, 2011)


      Summary of Nova Scotia surveillance findings, for the period ending January 15, 2011:

      Sporadic activity continues for the third week in Capital District Health Authority, with the rest of the province reporting no activity.

      Two lab confirmed cases of Influenza A were detected this week. One specimen is H3N2 and the other has not been subtyped.

        Week 3 (January 16 ? January 22, 2011)


        Summary of Nova Scotia surveillance findings, for the period ending January 22, 2011:

        Influenza activity is increasing in the province. DHA 7 and 8 report sporadic activity and DHA 9 reports localized activity.

        Four lab confirmed cases of Influenza A were detected this week. One specimen H3N2 , 2 have not been subtyped, and one pH1N1.

        Other respiratory pathogen activity is increasing. Positive results were received for RSV, parainfluenza, adenovirus, coronavirus, and rhinovirus.

          Week 4 (January 23? January 29, 2011)


          Summary of Nova Scotia surveillance findings, for the period ending January 29, 2011:


          Influenza activity is unchanged in the province. DHA 7 and 8 report sporadic activity and DHA 9

          reports localized activity.



          Seven lab confirmed cases of nontyped Influenza A were detected this week .


          Other respiratory pathogen activity continues. Positive results were received for RSV, coronavirus,

          Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydophila pneumoniae, and rhinovirus.



          New Brunswick activity is increasing, but is within the expected levels. Influenza A pH1N1,

          influenza A/H3 and influenza B have been confirmed, indicating several strains of influenza are
          circulating.



          Prince Edward Island is reporting localized influenza activity, and Influenza A pH1N1 and influenza

          A/H3 are circulating.



          Influenza activity in Maine has steadily increased in January 2011, and is now widespread. Influenza

          A pH1N1, influenza A/H3 and influenza B have been confirmed in Maine indicating several strains of

          influenza are circulating in Maine.

            Summary of Nova Scotia surveillance findings, for the period ending February 5, 2011:

            DHA 2, 7, 8 and 9 report sporadic activity

            Four lab confirmed cases of Influenza A were detected this week , three of which were pH1N1

            Other respiratory pathogen activity continues. Positive results were received for Parainfluenza, RSV and Rhinovirus.

              Summary of Nova Scotia surveillance findings, for the period ending February 12, 2011:

              Sporadic activity is reported in DHA?s 2, 4, 5, 7, 8 and 9

              Twenty six cases of lab confirmed Influenza were detected this week

              20 nontyped Influenza A

              4 seasonal Influenza A

              1 pH1N1

              1 Influenza B


              Other respiratory pathogen activity continues. Positive results were received for coronavirus, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, parainfluenza, pertussis, RSV and rhinovirus.

                Summary of Nova Scotia surveillance findings, for the period ending February 19, 2011:

                Localized influenza activity is reported in DHA?s 2, 5, 7, 8 and 9 with sporadic activity in DHA?s 3 and 4.

                There were 29 lab confirmed cases this week: 10 Seasonal (H3), 18 not yet sub-typed and 1 cases positive for both not yet sub-typed as well as pH1N1

                Other respiratory pathogen activity continues. Positive results were received for RSV, coronavirus, parainfluenza and rhinovirus.

                For this reporting week outbreak activity was noted in 4 Long Term Care Facilities and 2 Schools/Daycares.

                    RESPIRATORY WATCH Week 9 (February 27 ? March 5, 2011)

                    Summary of Nova Scotia surveillance findings, for the period ending March 5, 2011:
                    Localized influenza activity is reported in DHA?s 3, 8 and 9 with sporadic activity in DHA?s 1, 2 and 7.
                    There were 27 lab confirmed cases of influenza A (26 not yet sub-typed and 1 pH1N1) this week and 1 lab confirmed case of influenza B.
                    2 deaths were reported in individuals over 80 years of age, and both with noted comorbidities.
                    Other respiratory pathogen activity continues. Positive results were received for parainfluenza, metapneumovirus, coronavirus and RSV.
                    For this reporting week outbreak activity was noted in 5 Long Term Care Facilities, 3 schools and 1 hospital.

                      Localized influenza activity is reported in DHA 9 with sporadic activity in DHA?s 1, 7 and 8.
                      There were 24 lab confirmed cases of influenza A (12 not yet sub-typed, 11 H3 and 1 pH1N1) this week.
                      Other respiratory pathogen activity continues. Positive results were received for parainfluenza, metapneumovirus, coronavirus, rhinovirus and RSV.
                      For this reporting week, outbreak activity was noted in 2 Long Term Care Facilities and 5 schools/daycares.

                            One death reported in an individual over 65 years of age with comorbidities.
                            There were 31 lab confirmed cases of influenza A (1 pH1N1, 15 not yet sub-typed and 15 seasonal H3) this week.
                            Other respiratory pathogen activity continues. Positive results were received for adenovirus, parainfluenza, pertussis, rhinovirus and RSV.
                            For this reporting week, outbreak activity was noted in 2 hospitals and 3 schools/daycares.

                              There were 20 lab confirmed cases of influenza A (6 not yet sub-typed and 14 seasonal H3) this week.

                              Other respiratory pathogen activity continues. Positive results were received for enterovirus, mycoplasma pneumoniae, parainfluenza and RSV.

                              For this reporting week, outbreak activity was noted in 2 long term care facilities.
