SYDNEY ? Health officials in Cape Breton are asking the public to guard against what appears to be a serious strain of the flu.
There are currently three middle-aged adults who are so sick with the virus they had to be placed on ventilators.
The three have tested positive for the H1N1 strain.
The Cape Breton District Health Authority's medical officer of health Dr. Andrew Lynk says the severity of the cases is unusual, especially since it's so early in the flu season.
Flu-like symptoms were first reported in the district around Christmas.
Lynk says they are just starting to see an uplift in the number of cases now.
