    Swine flu claims Labrador woman

    CBC News
Heath officials have confirmed that a woman from Labrador has died after contracting swine flu.

The woman, whose age and hometown haven't been released, died over the weekend at a hospital in St. John's.

Dr. Muna ar-Rushdi, the medical officer of health for Labrador-Grenfell Health, said the woman had a number of other medical issues.

Her death is the eighth confirmed death in the province due to swine flu.

Six involved people who had other medical problems and one person had no known medical problems prior to contracting H1N1, according to medical officials.

On Friday, the province's health minister confirmed that the chief medical examiner in Newfoundland and Labrador is reviewing six other recent deaths to see if they were caused by swine flu.

Jerome Kennedy said lab tests have confirmed that the six tested positive for the H1N1 flu virus, either before or after they died.

Kennedy said a team of medical specialists, led by Dr. Simon Avis, the province's chief medical officer, will review those cases to see what role the virus might have played in their deaths.

The Public Health Agency of Canada defines an H1N1-related death as a death occurring in any person with lab-confirmed swine flu with "no period of complete recovery between the time of illness and the death."

That review is expected to be completed by next week.

Re: Eighth confirmed H1N1 death in the province

The H1N1 virus has claimed another life in the province and an investigation is underway by the Chief Medical Examiner into another death. A 40-year-old woman from Labrador West is the latest person to have died in this province as a result of H1N1 infection. Health Minister Jerome Kennedy says the woman died on Saturday and the family has expressed concerns about the woman's treatment. The Minister says the matter is now under review. He says they are waiting on the Medical Examiner's report on a second death on the weekend to determine if that too was H1N1 related. This brings to 8 the total number of confirmed H1N1 deaths while another 7 are under investigation. That number includes the 77 year-old Horwood man who died while being treated with Tamiflu. Kennedy says while some Central clinics have run out of vaccine, more will be brought in. The Minister is urging patience while further doses arrive and consideration is being given to a second line-up of clinics for children requiring a second dose.

Meanwhile, a number of H1N1 immunization clinics in Central Newfoundland are now closed, after all available vaccines were used. Central Health says vaccines have either been administered or allotted. Further clinics will be scheduled as vaccine becomes available. Residents in the area are asked to check the Central Health website, which is linked to vocm.com for further details.
