Swine Flu Cases Climb in Province
    June 19, 2009

There are now five confirmed cases of swine flu in the province and health officials are expecting more as the summer wears on. Two more cases were confirmed by the public health laboratory yesterday - one from a sample submitted through Eastern Health, the other from Central Health. It's believed that the latest two are mild cases. They also anticipate that the additional cases will be mild, similar to the usual seasonal flu. The advice is the same, wash hands regularly, cover coughs and sneezes, and stay home so that the illness is not spread to others.

This province has a high Inuit and Innu population in the Labrador region and MikMac on the island. With what has occurred in Manitoba during this outbreak and the high mortality rate these groups suffered during 1918 one is left to wonder what this province's aboriginal populations will experience from
H1N1. I suspect it will be just as bad or worse as the Manitoba groups are experiencing. Their living conditions and health are certainly no better than other aboriginal groups and I suspect much worse. Canadians may well remember the international attention drawn to their plight in the community of Davis Inlet. See link below.
