Influenza outbreaks at long-term care facilities

Local long-term care facilities are experiencing influenza outbreaks.
?What?s made it a little difficult for us is it?s not just influenza circulating in some of these long-term care facilities and also in the community. There?s a number of organisms,? said Dr. Mark Vooght, chief medical officer for Five Hills Health Region (FHHR).
?The most common at the moment (is) influenza A which we?d expect at this time of the year ... Later in the season, probably towards the end of January (or) February, it may transition into being influenza B predominant, but it?s too early to say right now.?
He said the Edgar Hall wing of Providence Place is experiencing an outbreak of influenza A and coronavirus OC43. The outbreak began on Dec. 28. Vooght said that specific wing is shut down.
The Raphael Wing of Providence Place had a respiratory outbreak and so did the Extendicare special needs unit, which is also shut down. Both of those outbreaks began on Jan. 2.

Eastern Health has closed another three long-term care facilities to visitors because of an increase in cases of the flu and flu-like illnesses.

They include the Harbour Lodge Nursing Home in Carbonear, as well as the Caribou Memorial Veterans Pavilion and St. Patrick's Mercy Home, both in St. John's...

Eastern Health Closes Golden Heights Manor to Visitors and Restricts Visitation at Six Acute Care Facilities

January 6, 2013 ? St. John?s, NL ? Eastern Health advises the public that visitation to the Golden Heights Manor in Bonavista is now closed to visitors due to an increase in cases of influenza and influenza-like illness. Immediate family members should contact the site directly at (709) 468-5260 for further direction on visitation.

Because a number of patients within the following acute care facilities have confirmed cases of influenza or influenza-like symptoms, the public is also advised that visitation is restricted to immediate family members only at the following facilities. Immediate family members should contact the sites directly for further direction on visitation.

Eastern Health advises the public that visitation to the Interfaith Citizen?s Home in Carbonear and the Salvation Army Glenbrook Lodge in St. John?s is restricted to immediate family members only due to an increase in cases of influenza and influenza-like illness, as well as gastrointestinal illness at Salvation Army Glenbrook Lodge.

Immediate family members should contact the sites directly for further direction on visitation. The phone numbers to call are:
